France’s GDP was 0.9% higher in the fourth quarter of last year compared with the same period in 2019, before Covid-19, surpassing the UK’s and Germany’s economic growth in the same period. 

But what explains this economic success? Is it the might of the French state, as some have suggested, or have the French begun to turn towards more economically liberal policies to drive growth?

In this episode of the IEA Podcast, IEA Head of Political Economy Dr Kristian Niemietz discussed a recently published review on how the healthcare system in England responds to reports about harmful side effects from medicines and medical devices.

Kristian sat down with Simon Whale, panel member and communications lead for the Independent Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Review and Dr Sonia Macleod, lead researcher, Independent Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Review.

They discussed how the NHS, and other health bodies, could improve their services to address poor care and prevent harm. They also assessed the recommendations of the Review.

In this episode, IEA Communications and Public Affairs Officer Kieran Neild-Ali sat down with IEA Head of Regulatory Affairs Victoria Hewson to discuss her latest paper- Changing the Rules: A unilateral approach to non-tariff barriers.

The paper argues that Britain must embrace a new radical free trade policy: unilateral recognition of EU rules should continue, even if the EU still declines reciprocity. This would be a very positive position for the UK to take in wider international trade with recognition of regulation from other territories for goods in the UK market.
