IEA Communications & Marketing Assistant, Kieran Neild-Ali, sat down with IEA Head of Political Economy Dr Kristian Niemietz to discuss his latest paper 'Left turn ahead' which includes polling that suggests younger people hold negative attitudes towards capitalism and favour socialist alternatives.
Kieran asked Kristian whether holding negative views towards capitalism was justified in the current climate, with young people being excluded from home ownership, jobs and good pay. Kristian argued that socialist solutions, which have high approval amongst young people, would do more harm than good. Instead, proponents of the free market must encourage radical policy solutions, like reforming planning, to end the housing crisis and win back the youth from socialism.

Professor Len Shackleton, Editorial & Research Fellow at the IEA, sits down with comedian Leo Kearse to discuss Leo's chapter in the IEA's new book 'Having Your Say'. Leo's chapter focuses on free speech in comedy and explores the area of censorship. You can read Having Your Say here - https://iea.org.uk/publications/havin...
The prevailing mood of political correctness inhibits comedians and makes people ashamed of what they or their parents used to laugh at in the past. While the consensus may be that there have to be some externally imposed limits on comedic speech, we can’t assume that those who police this speech will act reasonably. A healthy society needs to be able to laugh at itself, even if it occasionally hurts.

IEA Head of Media, Emily Carver, was joined by Chief Operating Officer at the Institute of Economic Affairs, Andy Mayer, to discuss critical race theory and whether it should become an integrated part of the workplace and HR practice.
The episode looks at why critical race theory is itself racist, as it presumes a group of people with a certain skin colour are inherently racist and hold power and privilege over fellow workers of different skin colour. Andy argued this can cause division and mistrust in the workplace and is bad HR practice.
Andy talked about how the IEA has decided to ignore critical race theory in its own HR strategy to protect staff against racism.
The podcast focuses on Andy's article for 1828, which you can read here.

The Institute of Economic Affairs hosted a discussion on the Impact of COP9 on Vapers. For the first time since leaving the European Union, in November 2021, the UK will send a delegation to the World Health Organisations Conference of Parties (COP) to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) is an international treaty under the auspices of the WHO dedicated solely to tobacco control. COP is the supreme decision-making body of the FCTC, where all parties to the FCTC meet biennially to review the implementation of the convention and adopt the new guidance.
The discussion centred on who represents the UK at COP, how decisions are reached (and whether we should listen to them), the impact of these decisions on the United Kingdom’s harm reduction progress, and the 2030 smoke-free target. Plus much more.
Our panel of expert speakers included IEA Director General Mark Littlewood (chair), Matt Ridley (Vice-Chair of the APPG on Vaping), Christopher Snowdon ( IEA Head of Lifestyle Economics), and Louis Houlbrooke (NZ Taxpayers Union).
