Renowned behavioral neuroscientist Carl Hart joins us to talk about his own book, "Drug Use for Grown-Ups". Carl discusses his own substance use as a famous academic, the early childhood experiences that led him to this point, and the war on drug users and its impact on stigma and shame over drug use in America.
The way you operate is like a phone. There are an endless number of things a phone can do, but most of these things require you to download a program or app. Similarly, your own abilities are limited by the “programs”, or beliefs, in your brain. You may talk about the things that you want to achieve, but if you don’t have the right beliefs there’s no way to make it happen.
In this episode, Dr. Jaffe introduces a simple exercise that you can use to start rewriting these programs and put yourself on the path to achieving your goals.
Demi Lovato recently made headlines for her announcement that she considers herself “California Sober” rather than practicing complete sobriety. The statement led to a wave of uproar among some in the recovery community. But what does it even mean to be “California Sober”? In this episode, Dr. Jaffe takes a look at the public reaction to Demi’s statements and explores the concept of recovery without abstinence.
Nobody's life is perfect. All too often, we make the mistake of comparing ourselves to others who seem incredibly successful. At IGNTD, we’ve worked with many of these so-called “perfect” people, and know firsthand that they struggle just as much as anyone else.
The only difference? What makes the people you look up to successful isn’t that they are perfect (they aren’t). It’s that they've taken the steps to focus on what's going on in THEIR lives and reached out to others for the help they need. To be successful, you need to stop focusing on comparing yourself to others and start focusing on what YOU need to do to improve your own life.
In this episode, we’re excited to bring you a segment from a recent IGNTD Recovery group hosted by Dr. Jaffe! For help with your own recovery, check out the IGNTD Hero Recovery Program
Humans are unique animals. When compared to other mammals such as horses or calves, we’re born relatively helpless. For the first few years of our life, we rely entirely on parental figures for our survival. What at first appears to be a major disadvantage, however, has a very important evolutionary explanation: our brain development. This “weakness” is actually a byproduct of our greatest strength and the reason behind our success as a species.
Whether in recovery or not, each of us is going through our own evolution. Much as your perceived disadvantage at birth is actually one of your biggest evolutionary advantages, so too are many of your own struggles necessary pieces of your evolution as an individual. Here at IGNTD, our goal is to help you evolve as a person, turning these “weaknesses” into your biggest strengths.
We release new motivation episodes every Monday for a reason: Starting off with your best foot forward is one of the most important steps you can take to stay motivated throughout the week. But what happens when your Monday starts off weak? In this episode, Adi shares a handful of small tools that you can use right now to get your week back on track.
Many of us struggle to come to terms with who we are as individuals. We’re ashamed of where we’ve been, we doubt who we are, and we’re afraid of where we’re going. That’s why at IGNTD we put such a strong emphasis on the importance of Honest Exploration. In this episode, we’re joined once again by Shannon Algeo, author of Trust Your Truth: Heal Self-Doubt, Awaken to Your Soul's Purpose, and Live Your Badass Life, to talk about shedding self-doubt, finding your purpose, and living a fulfilling life.
One of the biggest determinants of the quality of your life is the health of your relationships, but how do we know if our relationships are healthy? What steps can we take to improve our existing relationships? Jocelyn Johnson, the founder of the Happy Partners Project, joins us today to share her Relationship Check-In Method, a useful tool for engaging in open dialogue with your partner and assessing your relationship.
If you’ve ever been snowboarding or skiing, you already know that the learning process can be hard. After a period of excitement and motivation, you’ll probably realize that it’s a lot more difficult than you initially pictured. You’ll likely crash over and over again and become frustrated with a lack of progress. Over time, however, you’ll pick up the skills you need to take on harder and harder runs until, eventually, it becomes second nature.
Recovery follows a similar process. Many people experience a honeymoon phase, in which they are excited about their recovery and everything seems to be going right…until they “crash”. In this episode, Adi uses the analogy of snowboarding to explore ways in which we can overcome these crashes, keep ourselves motivated in recovery, and reach the stage where all of the skills we’ve learned along the way become second nature.
