Listen, I’m so glad Some Guy in Austin picked 16 Candles as his favorite movie as we finish up the Love Story Series. How I’ve managed to record nineteen of these episodes without mentioning this John Hughes classic is a mystery.

With the occasion all but overshadowed by her sister’s upcoming wedding, angst-ridden Samantha faces her 16th birthday with typical adolescent dread. Samantha pines for studly older boy Jake Ryan but worries that her chastity will be a turnoff for the popular senior. Meanwhile, Samantha must constantly rebuff the affections of nerdy Ted, the only boy in the school, unfortunately, who seems to be interested in her.

16 Candles taught us many lessons. We all have devastating stories from high school, most families are dysfunctional at some level, and even though the nerdy kid has endeared himself to you, never give him your underwear.

But the biggest lesson is that it IS POSSIBLE for two grown people to sit on top of a glass dining room table without it breaking. 

Call me, Jake. I’d like to re-enact that moment at your earliest convenience.
