At this point Dale and Brian have made it through several rollercoaster seasons in their entrepreneurial journey, persevering through hard blows and celebrating milestones. They just made it back from the most challenging project they’ve ever had, one they believed to be the opportunity of a lifetime in their business journey.

Finally feeling like they’re making headway in their business, they return home to a call that Astrolawn is out of business–and so are they.

Have you ever misread a road sign?

Sometimes signs in our lives are blatant; other times, they’re discreet. Sometimes, signs are forms of deception you have to fight through as you keep pushing forward.

When you’re walking through challenging seasons, and all the signs tell you it’s a dead end, will you have the courage, grit, and wisdom to discern if you should keep going? Will you be able to imagine what opportunity might be on the other side?

This story picks up right as Dale and Brian say “yes” to a long-awaited business opportunity. Despite not having the best tools and crew to complete it, they break through the barriers and make it happen anyway.

Challenges continue as they approach the job site amidst frigid temperatures and drop down from a crew of eight to three after just two days on the job.

All signs tell them to quit, but for Dale and Brian, quitting is not an option.

Do you wait for the right conditions to chase opportunity?

Sometimes we like to sit back, waiting for the conditions to be right and the risks to be minimal before we charge forward. We ask ourselves if the risk really outweighs the reward. But what if, as a result, we are missing endless opportunities?

At this point in the Karmie brother’s story, they’ve just come back to Albuquerque after a defeating season, leaving them with no team, missing equipment, and forcing Dale and Brian to start from scratch.

When they are presented with a huge opportunity requiring far more money, crew members, and knowledge than they currently had, Brian and Dale don’t hesitate for a second before saying yes. Though the risks certainly seemed to outweigh the probable rewards, Brian and Dale saw the opportunity of a lifetime with the potential to pave the way for business success.

Instead of allowing the opportunity to pass them by, Brian and Dale decide to take on a risk and plant seeds for what they believed could be an incredibly fruitful harvest later in their journey.

  • S1 E23: How Do You Respond When Storms Are Brewing?

    Send us Fan Mail

How do you respond when storms are brewing?

When facing a season of uncertainty in any arena of life– your business not quite taking off, your career path not feeling right, you’re facing a financial crisis or job loss-- whatever it may be, sometimes it feels easiest to hunker down and hide.

What if the best thing you can actually do is face your problems head on and keep trucking forward?

At this point in Dale and Brian’s story they are just starting to see some business success. They are coming through months of a busy season selling many projects and going at 100 miles per hour.

Then came the “September Slowdown.” The two and their small team went from selling projects left and right and breaking down business barriers, to a season where sales had come to a staggering halt. This season of “calm” was actually a storm brewing for their business and they were feeling it.

When faced with complete uncertainty in their business, financial instability and even house foreclosures, instead of hiding in fear, Brian and Dale choose to step out in faith with the help of their confident salesman Eli and his “crazy idea,” that would pull the business back up on their feet and plunge them through the storm.

If you take this story and apply it to your own life right now, you’ll see how you can walk out in faith to build momentum and get through stormy times.

    Episode Highlights:

    • Facing an extremely slow month in the business.
    • Opportunity for a “crazy” idea.
    • Eli’s confidence and persistence.

    • Turning $100,000 in business from the “crazy idea.”
    • Gaining inertia to keep moving forward.
    • Dale’s home being foreclosed on.
    • Heading toward the storm vs hiding from it.
    • Getting creative to generate business.
    • The impact of confidence.

  • S1 E22: Binoculars or a Microscope?

    Send us Fan Mail

How does your long-term vision affect your short-term action?

The daily challenges we face can sometimes distract us from the bigger picture we’re working toward. What can we do to shift our perspective and not lose sight of our big goals, the vision that got us started in the first place?

Since the beginning of their artificial turf business journey, Brian and Dale will tell you they have always looked through the lens of “binoculars rather than a microscope.” Through all of the highs and (many) lows, the big picture was always in mind– even if that big picture originated on a paper plate.

Today Brian and Dale talk through expanding territories of the Astrolawn business into Tucson and Orlando (two polar opposite landscapes) and the trials that followed. Their focus was not on profit, but on setting others up for success–something they knew would be key in creating a successful long-term business.

With a big-picture mentality, follow along as Brian and Dale continue to break barriers, befriend scorpions (you heard it here first), and pave the way for a successful, lasting venture.

    Episode Highlights:

    • Looking through binoculars rather than a microscope.
    • Randy expanding in Tucson.
    • Trouble with the tropics.. Ty’s expansion in Orlando.

  • S1 E21: Glass Ceilings--What's Holding You Back?

    Send us Fan Mail

    What’s Holding You Back?

Take a look at where you are now and your far-fetched goals of where you see yourself in the future. Whether in a business venture or personal goal, what is the thing preventing you from moving forward and getting where you want to be?

Brian and Dale start to see success in their business venture out west as they begin selling projects more consistently. However they can’t seem to cross certain sales thresholds when it comes to the size of their project sales.

The thing that’s holding them back? In this episode, they’ll tell you– that thing was themselves.

As they continue to get more business, Brian and Dale begin recognizing beliefs preventing them from reaching the next level. What would it take to sell $10,000 projects, $25,000 projects, and eventually over $250,000 projects and beyond?

Follow along as Brian and Dale use their competitive spirits, grit, and pure belief to break through the glass ceilings they built for themselves and propel their business to the next level.

    Episode Highlights:

    • Recognizing and overcoming limiting beliefs
    • The first $10,000 sale.
    • Breaking through glass ceilings.
    • Turning the impossible into what is expected.
    • You have to stretch your belief. What's limiting you is your mind.
    • Transferring belief to make sales.
