    When he was 19 years old, Detroit-native Shaka Senghor was sentenced to 17 years in prison for murder. He ended up serving 19 years, meaning half his life to that point had been spent behind bars. In prison, he came to grips with how his upbringing brought him to that place, started to take responsibility for his actions and learned to forgive others and himself. Senghor shares his personal journey in his new memoir Writing My Wrongs: Life, Death and Redemption in an American Prison. WBEZ’s Jenn White talked with him about what he’s experienced and how he’s trying to help the next generation of young people live positive lives.

    In our new Morning Shift series, we ask Dennis Rodkin of Crain’s Chicago Business: “What’s that building?” For this first installment, Dennis digs deep into the history of the I AM Temple at 176 W. Washington Street in Chicago’s Loop. The 15-story building started its life as an Elks Lodge in 1916 and was later converted into a temple for a spiritual-awakening organization founded in the early 1930s by Chicagoans Ray and Edna Ballard.

    Kartemquin Films is behind some of the best known documentaries — Hoop Dreams, Life Itself and The Interrupters to name a few.Founders Gordon Quinn and Jerry Blumenthal started the film collective in the 1960s to document Chicago’s most pressing struggles. As it continued to grow, Kartemquin became a powerhouse in not just the documentary world, but the film world. This year marks the group’s 50th anniversary. We talk to co-founder Gordon Quinn and executive director Betsy Steinberg about how Kartemquin approaches documentaries and how its films reflect each of the five decades the group has been in existence.
