In this episode, Jennie talks with Fr. Dan Reehil about the one question so many people have after the recent school shooting in Nashville. That question is simply...Why? Why does God allow such tragedies, especially to young children.
Father Dan's insights will bring you comfort and awareness as you begin to process this tragedy as well as other circumstances you may be facing in your life.

We are so blessed in Nashville to have Radnor Lake in the middle of our city. I am extra blessed because this state park is within 5 minutes of my house. Walking around Radnor Lake is one of my happy places. It is a time for me to enjoy God’s beautiful creation, pray and reconnect with myself. I love the quiet and hearing the sound of nature all around me. Recently, I was hiking up Gainer Ridge which is a 1.5 mile path to the top of the ridge. It is a pretty strenuous hike. As I was climbing up, I was reminded of the recent Gospel reading about the Transfiguration. I was thinking about Peter, James and John following Jesus up the side of the mountain. I wondered if their legs were burning like mine? I wondered if they had to pause for a minute and catch their breath? I wondered if they had thoughts like, are we ever going to get there? Or this is really hard…where is Jesus taking us?
The climb to the top of the mountain or the hill in front of you always includes discomfort and quite possibly discouragement.
Being a follower of Jesus isn’t always easy. Trusting in him and his goodness in times of suffering, uncertainty or in the face of fear can be difficult. Making the climb out of the valley is never fun,but the climb to the top is part of the journey, in fact it is the most important part of the journey. It is through the trials and struggles that you learn to appreciate the mountain top moments.
As much as we would like to live on the top of the mountain in those moments like Peter, James and John experienced in the transfiguration, that wouldn’t be practical. Life is full of ups and downs. In order to appreciate the mountain top moments, you also have to have periods of your life where you are stuck in the valley or slowly climbing up the side of the mountain. The pains, struggles, challenges and suffering in the valley and in the climb are what allow you to experience the transfiguration. Those feelings allow you to be grateful for the moments that you have clarity, peace and joy.
Listen to learn more about how to handle discouragement in your life!

My husband and I went to see the Jesus Revolution on its opening weekend. The movie is an honest look at the early 70’s hippie movement and how a few Christians opened the door for a Jesus Revolution. By sharing their faith in new and bold ways, they saved many souls who were broken and searching. Their actions, propelled by the Holy Spirit helped them to launch ministries and churches that are still serving and saving today.
As I left the theater that day, I was reflecting on my own faith life and felt God stirring my heart to step out of my comfort zone to share my faith in new and bold ways. At the beginning of the movie, Pastor Chuck Smith, played by Kelsey Grammer, is preaching to an empty and lifeless church. Going to church can often seem like you are going through the motions to check off the box instead of being fully aware of God’s presence.
One thing was certain when I left the theater, I wanted what they had. The kind of faith that is contagious and sets your heart on fire. So, I began to reflect on how I could create my own Jesus Revolution. How could I have that kind of humble and simple, yet powerful faith life that is meant to be shared with everyone.

I feel like I have a personal connection with Mother Seton. My great, great, great Aunt Mary or Sister Olivia, lived in Emmitsburg and was a member of the Sisters of Charity, she taught at the local Catholic High School. When Aunt Mary would come to Nashville for a visit, she always brought me some sort of trinket from Emmitsburg along with tales about the life of St. Elizabeth and her path to sainthood. This was in the early 70’s and she was canonized in 1975. As a young child, I loved to listen to her stories. Of course, the trinkets and stories were also a way to entice me to join the religious order as I got older. Although God called me to be a mom instead of a religious sister, the life of St. Elizabeth has touched me in many ways over the years. One of my most treasured gifts from Aunt Mary, is a bone relic from St. Elizabeth. I keep it in my office as a reminder that St. Elizabeth can be called on to intercede in prayers, I know that when I feel overwhelmed, worried, uncertain on my next move or simply tired from a busy day that she understands. Like most moms, she wore many hats and tirelessly served. Even though it isn’t an official title from the church, I consider her the patron saint of multi-tasking for mothers. I believe that she knows exactly how to intercede when I call on her for prayers.
Like most mothers, Elizabeth poured herself out to those around her through her words, actions and prayers. She cultivated deep relationships where she was a source of encouragement and teaching of the Catholic faith. Elizabeth’s life was filled with responsibilities, demands and new adventures and Even though Elizabeth was always going from task to task, she also craved time for quiet reflection and solitude so she could spend time with Christ.
St. Elizabeth is quoted as saying, “the nearer a soul is truly united to God the more its sensibilities are increased to every being of His creation; much more to those whom it is bound to love by the tenderest and most endearing ties.”
There is so much more to share, but hopefully you have an idea of why this saint is so important to me and for all mothers.
I want to share 3 powerful life lessons that I have learned over the years from the life and example of St. Elizabeth.
The first lesson is to meet everyone with charity, including those who are difficult to love or for that matter challenging to even be around.
The second powerful lesson that I learned is to be still in the presence of God. As I shared, St. Elizabeth lived a dynamic life, as a busy mom in the middle, you probably know how this feels, right? . She accomplished so much in her brief 46 years here on earth. Through her journals and letters, it is clear that St. Elizabeth desired quiet moments with God.
The third lesson is to follow where God leads with open hands and a heart full of grace. The life of St. Elizabeth took many unexpected turns and twists.
The life of St. Elizabeth contains many lessons for mid-life moms.

Did you know that what you believe creates the foundation for the results that you have in your life?
Beliefs are shaped by life experiences, society, and relationships with others. They form in childhood through absorbing information and forming opinions. Beliefs may have concrete evidence like sun rises every day or be based on unseen faith like receiving Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.
Beliefs matter because they create the foundation for all of the results that you have in your life. You take action based on your beliefs. Since they are such an integral part of your life, it is crucial to know what you believe. Exploring the beliefs that you have about yourself, your body, your abilities, your marriage, etc. will give you an insight into why you act or don't act in certain situations.
Catholic Life Coach, Jennie Guinn gives you steps to identify your beliefs and how to determine if the belief moves you in the direction of your goals or if the belief needs to be challenged and replaced.
