Chris Robinson on Eric Krasno Plus One. New episode today—Chris tells Eric about growing up in Atlanta, forming The Black Crowes with his brother when they were teenagers, and how he ended up in the role of frontman. The two dig deep into their love of music, the artists who first influenced Chris, from Sam & Dave to REM, and how he finally got into The Grateful Dead. They talk about what he’s listening to now, and reflect on their mutual friend and guitarist for Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Neal Casal.

36 From the Vault Covers 5/2/70. Just a couple of days off of the 50th anniversary, Steve and Rob are back This show is pretty fascinating, we get to see them working on songs from Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, in their acoustic set, like “Friend Of The Devil,” “Dire Wolf,” and “Black Peter.” And then the electric set gets weird. Lots of good jams, great time for the band. 

Jeff Kravitz 420 Live! If you all haven’t seen Jeff Kravitz’s daily show at 4:20 where he interviews people, you should check it out. He’s had everyone from George Porter Jr to Peter Shapiro to Stewart Copeland to Chris Kuroda and many more on his show. Galactic’s Rob Mercurio “My First Show” on JamBase Podcast. Rob talked with with JamBase’s Scott Bernstein aboard Jam Cruise 18 in January for a “My First Show” segment. Wanted to tell you about this “virtual city wide music and arts festival created to bring hope, inspiration, resources and love to Philly’s entertainment and arts community in these difficult times.” May 1-3, this is 3 days of performances with all proceeds benefiting 30amp Circuit’s grants for Philly musicians, entertainment professionals, venues, and charitable organizations. You can see people like G. Love, Kurt Vile, Marc Brownstein, Spaga with Aron Magner, Dr. Dog and more. 

Looking at Rift on HF Pod. We looked at this terrific album as part of our Back Tracking series, and we had a lot of fun breaking it down, sharing some clips and of course having a lot of laughs as well.

Bandcamp Waives Its Sales Cut on First Fridays. Via Consequence of Sound, we learned that in the midst of the crisis, Bandcamp is waiving its cut of online sales on the first Friday of the next three months (May 1, June 5 and July 3). Their CEO Ethan Diamond said “Finding ways to continue supporting artists in the coming months is an urgent priority for anyone who cares about music and the artists who create it.” Really cool. And Beyond the Pond will be tweeting a list of their recommendations every Thursday before these First Fridays. 

2pm ET—Eric Krasno Live with Ivan Neville on Instagram. Check out this live chat between Eric and Ivan. They’ll touch on jazz fest, the state of the music scene, and more.

Alex Bleeker of Real Estate on Brokedown Podcast. On this episode, Jonathan and Alex talk about the band’s new album, “The Main Thing” which was released in February. They talk about the band, the record, Alex’s solo projects and, of course, The Grateful Dead.

For the dinner portion, Mike Gordon shares three recipes from friend and chef Michael Solomonov’s landmark Philadelphia restaurant Zahav. The charity for this week is Frontline Foods, a grassroots volunteer-based non-profit that raises money to pay local restaurants to prepare meals for the heroes responding to the COVID-19 crisis. Marcus King on Eric Krasno Plus One. This week’s guest on the podcast is Marcus King. In one of the last in-person interviews Eric was able to do before the COVID-19 lockdown, he sat down Marcus, who talked about music memories, performing with his dad at age 13 and the deep musicianship that runs through his family. They talk about life on the road and what life off the road, however temporary, might produce; and, Marcus tells the story about the time he had to perform in front of Eric Clapton. The episode ends with Marcus’s song “Beautiful Stranger” off the El Dorado album, which was produced by Dan Auerbach.

Festival Circuit: New Orleans. We’re excited to announce a new series that will premiere in June, despite the cancellation of the Jazz Fest. We hope you’ll tune into this five-episode series.

Les Claypool on The Tapes Archive. This never before heard interview from 1994 touches on a bunch of topics, including how he got into the bass, the way he plays, headlining Lollapalooza, the album Pork Soda, and more. 

Jazz Festing in Place. Of course, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival will not be happening this year (first time it’s been canceled in the 50 years of existence). New Orleans radio station WWOZ will be hosting this virtual festival, which will be archival recordings of Jazz Fest sets. They’re trying to mirror the festival schedule, and includes sets from Dr. John, Fats Domino, The Neville Brothers, Irma Thomas, The Meters, Allen Toussaint, Henry Butler, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Trombone Shorty, Kermit Ruffins, The Radiators and more. And we’re going to be continuing to work on our Jazz Fest related podcast, Festival Circuit, which we’re going to release in June. 

8pm ET—Garcia Live Listening Party. The Jerry Garcia Family invites you to a Facebook live stream listening party Thursday at 8pm ET to celebrate the release of GarciaLive Volume 13: September 16th, 1989 Poplar Creek Music Theatre featuring special guest Clarence Clemons! Beyond the Pond—Chicago 2003 Gotta Jibboo. Brian and Dave talk about the groovy Gotta Jibboo from February 20, 2003. Who doesn’t love a dance party?

Tiger King Comes to Osiris! The show that literally everyone has watched. Listen to hosts Michael Shields and Justin Wells put forth a top ten list of the most astonishing moments present in the documentary, and in doing so shine a light on the implausible perversity and outlandish personalities present in the miniseries.

Earth Day Live! Starting tomorrow morning and going through Friday, there are literally hundreds of artists participating in this event. I will say that Questlove and Talib Kweli will both be doing nighttime performances, but if you like music, you can catch basically any artist at any time of the day. 

7pm—Ivan Neville Live. Today starting at 7pm ET, Ivan will be playing piano from his living room and taking requests from the audience!

8pm—Whiskey Sour Happy Hour from BGS. For four weeks starting today, Ed Helms will host musical performances from some musicians and a few of his friends will pop by to chat, too. Week one features Lee Ann Womack, Billy Strings and more.
