In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the injured players that are working and preparing to come back. Nick Backstrom who was thought to miss all of this season is showing improvement. TJ Oshie and Dimitri Orlov are also showing signs of returning soon.
Later in the show Dan talks about the frustration on this Capitals team. This is a veteran core of players that have accomplished many things together. They believe that they need to solve the consistency issue internally. The Capitals are missing a lot of players due to injury. What will this team look like after they return? If their still not getting positive results, then maybe they need to look into making a trade.
In the final segment Dan talks about one of the bright spots on this Caps team in Conor Sheary. Conor Sheary has scored three goals in his last five games and his seven goals this season rank second on the Capitals, trailing only Alex Ovechkin (9). With 10 points (7g, 3a) in 20 games, Sheary is on pace to record 28 goals and 41 points this season. Should Sheary maintain his scoring pace, he would establish a new career high in goals (2016-17: 23). Six of Sheary's seven goals have come at five-on-five, which leads the Capitals and ranks tied for 13th in the NHL. Sheary's only goal not scored during five-on-five play was a shorthanded goal on Oct. 24 at New Jersey, which marked his first career shorthanded goal. Sheary ranks second among Capitals forwards in shorthanded ice time per game (2:06). Prior to the start of this season, Sheary averaged 0:14 of shorthanded ice time per game in his career. Since joining the Capitals ahead of the 2020-21 season, Sheary ranks second on Washington in goals with 40 (Ovechkin: 83) and second in goals at five-on-five with 32 (Ovechkin: 41). Among active forwards that went undrafted, Sheary ranks fifth in career goals (112) and seventh in games played (469).
