This week on Inspire Change, Gunter dives into a meaningful conversation about what is normal? He breaks down what Gabor Mate teaches about healing. This mindful discussion is inspired after reading Mate's book: The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness and Healing in a Toxic Culture

Gabor Maté is a Hungarian Born/Canadian physician. He has a background in family practice and a special interest in childhood development, trauma,[2]and potential lifelong impacts on physical and mental health, including autoimmune disorders, cancer, ADHD and addiction. Maté's approach to addiction focuses on the trauma his patients have suffered and looks to address this in their recovery. In his book In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction, Maté discusses the types of trauma suffered by persons with substance use disorders and how these disorders affect their decision-making in later life.

We all have a story. Stories that touch us the most are about that moment when we make the choice to be real, to drop any pretense of pride, power and position. In that telling moment we step into a new space where our ability to overcome fear allows us to be truly authentic in our relationship to the world. In that moment we become fully human. Gunter has authored a novel Mountains of Sea published by Winterwolf Press and he self-published the non-fiction, Making Good Men Great: Surfing the New Wave of Masculinity. This week on Inspire Change, Gunter opens up a meaningful conversation on men, emotional literacy and breaking the silence. Men take notice not just for yourself, but for your kids, particularly your sons.

In this deep dive, we'll answer the question: What is emotional literacy?

• Essentially it is the ability to identify what you are feeling.
• Ability to make sense of it.
• Be able to express it in a way that builds connection rather than creating conflict, especially toxic conflict.

HERE IS THE KICKER:  Most men were never taught how to do that, but even given leeway to suppress those emotions and do the opposite. By doing this it isolates men from themselves and reactivity becomes the default.

Gunter is a psychologist, speaker, author, mentor, coach and facilitator with over 30 years experience in counseling and organizational development. We all have a story. Stories that touch us the most are about that moment when we make the choice to be real, to drop any pretense of pride, power and position. In that telling moment we step into a new space where our ability to overcome fear allows us to be truly authentic in our relationship to the world. In that moment we become fully human. Gunter has authored a novel Mountains of Sea published by Winterwolf Press and he self-published the non-fiction, Making Good Men Great: Surfing the New Wave of Masculinity. Both books are available at all major and independent retailers globally. The Making Good Men Great Movement also made Oprah’s #MustWatch list in 2018.
