  • Best Of Season 3 - Part 2
We’re back with Part 2 of the Best of Intellicast 2020! In this episode, Brian and Brian revisit interviews with Damon Jones of Burke and Shannon Frazier of Directions Research.
[0:01:30- 0:43:35] In Damon’s interview, Brian and Damon discuss their involvement in the Great Lakes Chapter of the Insights Association and how Damon started at the Insights Association as well as the various roles he has held over the past 18 years within the organization. Brian and Damon are also members of the Diversity and Education Committee and talk about the importance of diversity within market research. It’s a topic they’re both truly passionate about! In the second half of the interview, they chat about Cincinnati sports!
[0:44:35- 1:38:50] Shannon’s interview starts with a discussion of SampleCon, which she, Brian, and Mary attended the previous week. They talk about some of the key themes of the conference including data quality, blockchain, and the state of the industry. This is a great conversation because you get perspectives of the conferences from a sample supplier and buyer as well as long-time SampleCon attendees and a first-time attendee. It was also one of the last in-person conferences of the year! In the final 15 minutes of the interview, Shannon and Mary discuss their shared love for Publix.
Part 2 of the “Best of Intellicast 2020” series is an awesome recap of some of the major themes of the market research industry this year from diversity and inclusion to data quality. Stay tuned for Part 3 next week!

  • Best Of Season 3 - Part 1
Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are taking some time off, but don’t fret, we have a couple of episodes for you where we will revisit some of our favorite interviews from this year.
In part 1 of our “Best of” episodes, we revisit our interviews with Jeremy and John Zogby of John Zogby Strategies and Chris Powell of Talmetrix.
[0:01:32- 0:36:10] In the Zogby interview, Jeremy and John discuss The Main St./ K St. IntelligenSEER. They talk about ideas for it, how it came to fruition, and the goals they have for it going forward. This leads to a great discussion on how quickly the world is changing and the need to understand what people think will come next. This is an interesting interview to listen to in retrospect of the election.
[0:37:15- 1:11:20] Chris chats with Brian and Brian about Talmetrix’s focus on employee engagement and Chris’s background. They also discuss employee engagement research and the difference between employee satisfaction and employee engagement. Employee engagement research has more in common with traditional consumer research than you might think! Chris also has a great take on the 4 Ps in the second half of the interview.
Part 1 of the “Best of Intellicast 2020” series is a great episode to catch you up on some great interviews from the past year. Stay tuned for Part 2 next week!

  • S3E50 - Vaccines, Pandemic Budgets, and More!
Welcome back to Intellicast! It has been a couple weeks, but we are back at it with a news filled episode!
The guys kick off the episode discussing the recent news about the COVID-19 vaccines, and what that means to the world overall, the potential end to the pandemic, if it means we’ll have in-person conferences this year, and if consumer behavior will take another drastic change.
The guys then turn to the latest market research news, starting with Thriveplan rebranding as Alpha-Diver.
They then discuss the announcement from Apple about a new anti-tracking feature they are getting ready to roll out, and how it could impact the market research industry.
The next two stories kind of go hand in hand. They talk about a recent Kantar report about the drop in market research budgets in the UK, and a WARC’s report on the decline in the global ad market both due to COVID-19.
Brian and Producer Brian then talk about Leger’s new acquisition of SmartPoint Research, and the Insights Association launch of the IDEA council.
The episode finished up with a quick preview for Insights Marketing Day!

  • S3E49 - A Third Go Around With Jeremy Zogby
Welcome back to Intellicast! On this week’s episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are joined for a third time by Jeremy Zogby, Partner at John Zogby Strategies.
Jeremy and the guys discuss how difficult polling is, the results of the 2020 election (at least where it stood on Thursday), and how their poll stood up compared to others that were out there. (Hint: It was closer than most!)
Jeremey and Brian also discuss the townhall Jeremy and his father, John, held last week just prior to the election. Jeremy talks about the turn time from fielding to presenting, as well as talks about some of the organizations that were in attendance.
Throughout the conversation, the guys talk about polling overall, and Jeremy compares their poll to some of the others out there. He also talks about how polling is not just a science, but that art needs to be included.

  • S3E48- A Woj Bomb for MRX
Welcome back to Intellicast! To be completely honest, we went down some deep rabbit holes on this one.
Brian Lamar and Producer Brian kick the episode off by talking about the newly announced partnership between EMI and SampleChain. Brian talks about what it entails and how it is going to impact the future.
Then the guys dive into non-EMI-related market research news. First, we recognize the winner of the MRX Diversity Champion Award, Damon Jones. Brian talks about some of the efforts that Damon has been involved in that has led him to win this award. You can hear more about it here.
Next, Brian and Brian talk about the announcement that Ryan Smith, co-founder of Qualtrics, has agreed to purchase the Utah Jazz. This leads to a discussion of potential new speakers for the new X4 conference, will X4 attendees get to go to a game as part of the event, and potential new names for the Jazz – all market research related.
The guys then discuss the new funding that Toluna has secured, the recent reorganization at MetrixLab, Suzy’s new product launch, and NielsenIQ.
In the last segment, the guys discuss the upcoming election, and what it the different results could mean for the polling industry. This leads to Producer Brian going deep down a rabbit hole about 24-Hour news and opinion-based news stations.

  • S3E47 – Oh Great, Here Comes Bezos
Welcome back to Intellicast! We have a great new episode for you.
Brian Lamar and Producer Brian kick off the episode discussing Brian’s involvement in his local government and some of the activities he has been involved in.
The guys then dig into the latest marketing research news. The first story they cover is Paradigm’s acquisition of the Tellwut panel assets.
The next few stories continue the rebranding/naming segment we have had the past few weeks. We talk about how SurveyGizmo has rebranded as Alchemer. Then we turn our attention to the investment Clovis Point Capital has made in NinjaCat.
The guys then discuss a recent article about how 40% of CMOs said their most significant challenge of the next year is to understand consumer behavior and what changes are permanent versus temporary.
That dovetails nicely with the next story on how two-thirds of global brands plan to invest in their brands in the next 12 months, despite the pandemic.
Finally, the guys discuss the recent news from Amazon and their launch of a new invite-only panel and what that means not only for the sample industry but other industries.

  • S3E46 – Mental Health in Market Research
Welcome back to Intellicast! We have a special episode for you today. Joining Brian Lamar and Producer Brian is Courtney Sandfoss, a member of EMI’s business development team and our Chief Health Officer.
We kick off the episode discussing some of the latest market research news. We start by discussing the new Top 50 Report, formerly the Honomichl and Gold.
The team then discusses the comments by Leah Kennedy of BT about resisting the call of faster insights, and how it impacts not only the qualitative side but also the quantitative side.
They then touch on the recent changes to Schlesinger’s executive suite.
In the last news story, Courtney, Brian, and Producer Brian talk about Facebook’s recent announcement about halting political advertising after the US election. All three were a bit skeptical about the motives around this, and if Facebook would actually hold to that pledge.
In the second half of the episode, Brian, Courtney, and Producer Brian have a deep discussion around mental health and the market research industry. The conversation stemmed from a recent Insights Association survey, and the webinars they held around the topic. They talk about some of the results, and why they were what they were. They also discuss their own experiences during the pandemic, and what they have done about them.
