  • Intellicast S3E33-- Data Quality from the Client-Side with Tia Maurer
Welcome back to Intellicast! We continue our thought leadership series with another great guest! Joining Brian Lamar and Producer Brian is Tia Maurer, a Group Scientist for Product Research Testing at Proctor and Gamble.
The interview kicks off with Tia describing a bit of her background, as well as her current role with Proctor and Gamble and where it fits in the market research industry.
Then Brian and Tia jump into a detailed discussion on data quality, starting with Tia talking about a presentation she has given a few times over the years about the topic, and how it still applies today. Tia also gives some examples of how they do it at P&G, as well as some examples of the different types of fraud she has encountered.
Tia then gives us an example of ghost completes, and how they are impacting the sample industry, and how brands view the problem. She then turns the example into a holistic view on how poor data quality and fraud is impacting how brands view sample suppliers.
This leads to a discussion on changes to the overall industry they both want to see happen and how it can lead to better data quality.
Brian then asks Tia about where she sees the future of market research and sample heading and is she optimistic about it. You don’t want to miss her answer!
In the final segment of the interview, we find out that Tia was a competitive baton twirler, and still twirls to help relieve stress. And what is probably the best “Pandemic” answer we’ve ever had, we learned that she and her husband have been watching regional Elvis tribute artist (she told us they are more than impersonators) competitions on Facebook and Zoom. There is even a website that streams the performances every weekend. It is right up there with Brian’s newfound love of marble racing. It was such a great answer, Brian skips the rest of the 4 P’s!
If you are all about data quality – this is the episode you do not want to miss!
You can connect with Tia on LinkedIn here.

  • S3E32 - Talking Healthcare Research with Steve Barnard of The Link Group
Welcome back to Intellicast! We continue our special thought leadership series this week with another great guest. Joining Brian Lamar, Producer Brian, and Andrew DeCilles on this episode is Steve Barnard, the Senior Vice President at The Link Group, to discuss healthcare research.
Before we jump into the interview, Brian Lamar confesses he got the Intellicast Twitter account suspended by changing the birthday settings. (Update: It’s now back up and running!) The revelation leaves Producer Brian a bit perplexed.
We then jump into the interview with Steve. It starts with the guys learning about Steve’s background and what his current role is at The Link Group.
We then jump into discussing healthcare research, starting off with a discussion if COVID-19 has had an impact, if there had been any changes in methodology, and if Steve had seen any changes in response rates. This leads into some tips on if certain questions should be included in the research.
This leads to a discussion around The Link Group’s new report using their unique methodology called LinkEQ (Emotional Measurement Research) that focuses on primary care physicians. They guys discuss the goals of the research, a quick review of LinkEQ, and some of the key findings.
The guys then discuss data quality in healthcare research, and if there are any differences when compared to consumer research.
We then get a bit philosophical when Andrew and Steve discuss the impact of the research they do on the world and how they feel about it.
In the last segment of the interview, we do an abbreviated version of the 4 P’s and learn that Steve has recently gotten chickens. This leads to Andrew letting us know that he has built a worm farm in his garage for better compost.
    This is an insightful episode!

  • S3E31 – Data Quality with Terry Crawford of MMR
Welcome back to Intellicast! We have another special episode for you. This week Brian Lamar, Producer Brian, and Andrew DeCilles are joined by Terry Crawford, the Senior Vice President of Operations for MMR, to have an in-depth discussion on data quality.
The episode kicks off with Brian and Andrew discussing with Terry his background and his current role at MMR.
This leads to the meat of the interview, where all three have a deep discussion around sample and data quality. It starts with a discussion with Terry where he believes good data comes from, and what he looks for in sample providers to work with.
The conversation then turns into some of the methods and best practices that Terry and MMR go through to ensure the quality of their sample and the subsequent data. It includes a wide variety of measures, from different questions, systems, etc.
Brian then brings up removals and the criteria that should be used to remove potential bad data. Terry gives us some great perspective on what to look for, and why there needs to be several criteria met to have someone excluded, rather than a respondent who just triggers a single quality measure, like speeding through a survey.
In what may the best part of the interview, we discuss with Terry where the ownership of data quality lies. You may be surprised by his response!
In the final segment of the interview, we get to know Terry on a more personal level with a new round of 4 P’s. We find out Terry’s hidden talent (or lack thereof), as well as his new quarantine habit, as well as a source of pride for him.
This is a great interview – especially if sample and data quality matter to you.

  • S3E27- A NEXT 2020 Preview, Sports, and WFH Fails
Welcome back to Intellicast! We have a jammed-packed episode for you. Andrew DeCilles joins Brian Lamar and Producer Brian to talk the latest market research news, a new study on sports and its impact on society, virtual conferences and work-from-home fails.
The episode kicks off with the guys talking how some sports leagues are starting to release plans to resume play and the economic and mental health impact of it. This leads directly into a discussion of a recent report by JWB# Media Insights on how essential sports is to Americans. The guys each give their perspective, not only of the results, but also their personal perspective (which differ greatly). The conversation takes a bit of a philosophical turn, where they guys talk how sports can be an escape for many and what that means during the pandemic.
In the next segment, Brian Lamar gives us a new research rant that is very timely. In a turn, Andrew and Producer Brian actually push Brian on the rant, and it leads to a discussion about why research needs to be conducted, but how messaging and positioning need to be considered.
Andrew then gives us his own rant, but instead of a research rant, he gives us a sales rant. His rant (or more venting) is about not being able to see clients face-to-face. Andrew totally understands the reason for no travel, it is more about how he likes to sell and how it is impacting him. Producer Brian just thinks it because Andrew has been at home with 2 children under the age of 3 for the last 2 months and needs to get some sleep.
After the rants, Brian gives us a preview of the upcoming NEXT conference, which is the first of the traditional in-person conferences to go virtual. The guys talk about some of the sessions, as well as the impact of the conference going virtual to different types of attendees. They also speculate on if this is going to be an ongoing trend even after the pandemic is over.
We then bring back Mount Rushmores – this time on the topic of work-from-home fails.
In the final segment of the episode, we touch on the latest market research news, include the new position for Jake Pryszlak, COVID’s impact on the UK market research industry, a new Dunn & Bradstreet report on data quality, and the new board members for Samplechain.
    We hope you enjoy!

  • S3E26 – Worker Happiness and a New Media Study
Welcome back to Intellicast! On this episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian catch-up and discuss the latest in market research, current events, and more!
The episode kicks off with the guys discussing a new study released by CNBC and SurveyMonkey on worker happiness that found 38% of Americans are happier now than before the pandemic.
This then leads into a discussion of a recent music event by an artist that is near and dear to us – Prince. The Prince estate streamed one of his concerts from the 1980s on YouTube this past weekend, and needless to say, Brian Lamar tuned in (more than once). He gives Producer Brian a recap of the concert and some of his top moments.
The conversation then turns to states starting to open back up, in particular Ohio. They discuss what they experience this weekend where restaurants and other businesses started to open in a limited capacity, and what it means. They also touch on how the opening will go and what is their own personal lines of doing things but remaining safe.
In the last segment, the guys touch on some of the latest market research news, including Measure Protocol’s new QuickAnswers solution, ESOMAR’s report on the $18.7B loss of value the insights sector is facing, and a new media study by Havas Media Group on the habits and behaviors of Gen Z.
