  • 1 Corinthians (part 29)

    Hello!

Thank you all very much for listening to this podcast!

In this 29th episode of our meandering teaching series/walk through the city of Corinth, taking the weight off our feet, we come to a moment of quiet reflection by stopping to sit on a stone wall in the warmth of the Greek sunshine and to draw some water from a well we've been welcomed to use.

We’re going to spend some time thinking about what we have  already seen in our recent travels last week.

Our three verses for this week are vv12-14 of chapter 10.

What does it mean for each of us individually to 'take heed' and, indeed, what does it mean for all of us to do this as the Church...as His beloved Bride? What does it mean for us to flee from idols? What will this look like in your life and in our lives all together?

Can I submit every injustice to His capable care? What does Israel’s history with idolatry do to my heart?

    Consider Jude’s doxology:

“Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.” (Jude:24-25)

Today we release a new film and song of worship - Calling YESHUA - and you can find this here.

Please consider sharing this film/song to your networks for us.

Also, if you would like to support our ongoing work like this in prayer and/or via financial giving, you can do so here.

    Thanks so much.

    Until next week, Maranatha!

    Love,

    N&M xx

  • What Manner of Man is the Prophet? (feat. Gregg Cunningham)

    Hello!

Thank you all very much for listening to this podcast!

We're delighted this week to introduce our first Friday guest of this new season as our focus on "all of the prophets" unfolds.

Gregg Cunningham is the Executive Director of the Centre of Bio-Ethical Reform based in California, USA. Greg is a former two-term Member of The Pennsylvania House of Representatives where he introduced legislation which ended public funding for abortion. He was also a prime sponsor of the Abortion Control Act. He is a retired U.S. Air Force Reserve Colonel with six years of active duty service and twenty-five years in the ready reserve. He is also a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. Read Gregg's full bio here.

In this guest session looking at the prophets, Greg steers us through Abraham Heschel's classic work of the same title. Read Gregg's full,  45-bullet-point excerpt here.

We wanted to explore something of Heschel at this stage because of the importance he’s made in our own understanding about the gift of prophecy in the Old and New Testaments. Nick's book, Body Zero, gives a whole chapter to one of Heschel's main insights - divine pathos.

Here's what Heschel says in his opening chapter,

"Indeed, the sort of crimes and even the amount of delinquency that fill the prophets of Israel with dismay do not go beyond that which we regard as normal, as typical ingredients of social dynamics . To us a single act of injustice--cheating in business, exploitation of the poor - is slight; to the prophets, a disaster. To us injustice is injurious to the welfare of the people; to the prophets it is a deathblow to existence: to us, an episode; to them, a catastrophe, a threat to the world."

  • Clarifying Contraception 2 (feat. Dave Brennan)

    Hello!

Thank you very much for listening to our podcast.

Our mid-week session today with Dave Brennan of Brephos is continuing our conversation about contraception and, specifically this week, to examine the world/church cultures into which we have all be born.

How is it that the people of God are generally silent about abortion? Isn't it more than likely that we are all unwittingly imbibing the godless cultures of this world that all too often leave us gullible and undiscerning? What does this have to do with contraception?

Today, Nick, Mairi and Dave read Psalm 94 out loud and then explore some of these questions together with reference to Scripture.

Do you have any thoughts/comments/questions? Please do get in touch via Firebrand Notes and we'll include these in a forthcoming episode in a few weeks time when we'll be joined by Dave's colleague, Joanna, who has done a lot of work in this area of contraception.

  • 1 Corinthians (part 28)

    Hello everyone!

Welcome back to the resumption of City of Temples, our teaching series through the book of 1 Corinthians.

Last time we concluded chapter 9 and today we will go through the first 11 verses of chapter 10.

(*Please excuse the pigeons in today's recording. We're experiencing a "heat wave" here in Scotland so I needed the window open!*)

What is the nature of idolatry beyond the cliche? What's going on when we prefer our cars to our Bibles? What's going on when we prefer food to prayer? What's going on when we're more devoted to people than Yahweh?

What's going on when we are more enamoured with church than the coming of the Lord Jesus?

  • All the Prophets (feat. Nick & Mairi Franks)

    Hello Everyone!

We hope this podcast finds you well; thank you for listening along!

This is the first episode of season 4 where we record together on the sprawling theme of "All the Prophets". If you've missed the season preview, you can go ahead and listen to it here.

Looking at Acts 3 and Luke 24, we spend this session thinking about why it would be wise and helpful for us all individually - and for the Church as a whole - to spend an entire season looking at the prophets of old.

Are some prophets more important to us now than others? What's the difference between the Old Testament Prophets and the prophetic, Spirit-filled Church today? (Recommended reading on this here) What can we hope to glean from an extended focus on Moses to Malachi....? ...and beyond?  Do our hearts burn within us?

Throughout this season, we will be welcoming guests to teach/discuss about "all the prophets" with a view of applying specific biblical insight into our current juncture in world/Church history.

Part of this will also be focusing on the book of Revelation.

We hope that you enjoy this season and that your testimony, along with ours, will be,

“Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”

  • Clarifying Contraception (feat. Dave Brennan)

    Hello Everyone!

Thank you for listening to/sharing this podcast!

As our fourth season of Into the Pray gets going, we join with Dave Brennan of Brephos for our weekly conversation about abortion.

Today we begin our mini-series about contraception.

Like with our conversations about IVF, with Bibles at the ready, we are looking to the leading of the Holy Spirit as we join minds, hearts and prayers to come to His "position" on these infinitely important issues.

Here is a rough outline of where we're going over the next three weeks:

Episode 1: Contraception: The Facts - Which "contraceptives" have the potential to end human life that's already begun?

Episode 2: Contraception: The Culture - What are the ideas, attitudes, dreams, and fears that fuel our assumptions and decisions when it comes to contraception?

Episode 3: Contraception: Where Do We Stand?

As usual, we welcome questions/comments that we will include in future episodes, so please do get in touch!

With some unforeseen factors delaying release, Calling Yeshua will be ready at the end of July - more info here.

Please do consider forwarding this podcast to your networks for us and supporting our work here.

Thanks so much and, once again, for listening!

  • Season 4 Preview: All the Prophets (feat. Nick Franks)

    Hello everyone!

Thank you for listening to this podcast!

We've missed our regular podcasting sessions with you all while we've been working on a new film and song of worship entitled, Calling YESHUA. You can find out about this forthcoming release - and how to support production - by clicking here.

Today we are previewing our fourth season on Into the Pray and the focus that has dropped into our hearts as we've paused, prayed and waited for His help.

"All the prophets" is one of Peter's phrases from Acts 3:24 as he makes his speech in Solomon's Portico. Remember Peter's woeful denial of Jesus and his restoration in John 21? This is now a different man emerging as a newly emboldened witness, full of the fear of God.

It is our prayer as we study and linger and learn and wrestle with the prophets of old in this season that we will know something more of the fear of the Lord in our midst.

It is our prayer that the ensnaring fear of man will be smashed to smithereens as the compelled, prophetic people of God, like Peter, lift their voices in Spirit-wrought gospel proclamation..in and out of the Church.

God knows we need freedom from the fear of man inside the Church as well as in the highways and byways.

  • 1 Corinthians (part 27)

    Hello Everyone,

[Quick notice: We have a new film in the pipeline, a piece of content that we have no doubt is extremely important for the Body of Christ at large. We're needing some help with the practicalities/financial costs associated, so if you would like to help with this, to make it happen, and get more info ahead of release, please feel free to drop us a line. We very much value your interest/support.]

This week in City of Temples we finish 1 Corinthians chapter 9 by focusing on verses 15-27.

What does Paul's defence of his apostleship teach us today? What can we learn from one of the most famous passages in the New Testament?

Thank you for praying for us as we seek Him in the next few weeks. Please pray especially for Nick's health (a needed touch of healing), for the film/worship project we’re producing, (Calling Yeshua), and for wisdom concerning our future as we anticipate what may be ahead.

Please do consider sharing this podcast to your networks.

Also if you would like to help support this podcast and the wider work we're pioneering, including efforts to improve our podcast videos, we would be very grateful as we increasingly find ourselves at capacity in more ways than one. You can give here.

    Lots of love,
