Irish Breakdown

Today's Rapid Fire topics include:

* Breaking news that Notre Dame baseball alum Eddie Smith has been named head baseball coach at the University of Washington.

* Fill-in the blank...It’s BLANK that Mitchell Evans didn’t play the entire month of November after tearing his ACL last season...but he still led Notre Dame in both receptions and receiving yards.

* Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow says there should be a second bye week during the NFL season if the league adds an 18th game to the schedule. He also says the entire league should take a break that week to play the Pro Bowl games. Buy or Sell the idea?

* Pittsburgh Pirates rookie pitcher Paul Skenes has been named to the All-Star team with 10 starts to his credit. There’s talk about whether or not Skenes should start for the National League. Do you Buy or Sell it?

* The New York Yankees have lost 16 of their last 22 games, including 6 of their last 7. Do you Buy or Sell manager Aaron Boone as the fall guy?

* Former Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew is running with the bulls on his vacation in Spain. Would you ever run with the bulls?

Irish Breakdown discusses several players who could emerge for Notre Dame over the course of the upcoming football season. We also talk about how difficult it is to find a true "below the radar candidate" considering how much we talk about virtually every player throughout the year.

Rapid Fire topics include:

* On a scale of 1 to 10...What’s your confidence in Notre Dame as a playoff team with Riley Leonard as quarterback and what would it be if Steve Angeli was the starter with no Leonard on the roster?

* Transfer portal comments from Leonard from his time at the Manning Passing Academy.

* Bigger deal: Howard Cross and Xavier Watts getting First Team Preseason All-American honors or Cassandre Prosper playing for the Canadian Olympic women’s basketball team.

* Fill-in the blank....It’s BLANK that Cal will travel 24,000 miles for its five road games this season at Auburn, Florida State, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, and SMU in its first season in the ACC this fall.

* Fill-in the blank...Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese making the WNBA All-Star game which will pit the All-Stars against the US Olympic team means BLANK.

With the start of fall training camp just over three weeks away, Irish Breakdown talks Notre Dame quarterbacks on today's show. We take a look at where Steve Angeli, Kenny Minchey and CJ Carr all stand. Among the other things we discuss:

* The strengths, weaknesses and ceiling and floor for all three.

* Has Minchey gotten lost in the shuffle between Angeli and Carr?

* What chance would Minchey have to be Notre Dame's No. 2 QB behind Riley Leonard if Carr hadn't been an early enrollee?

* Is there a path for Minchey to pass Angeli and hold off Carr to become the No. 2 during training camp?
