Irish Breakdown

Rapid Fire topics include:

* Irish special teams coordinator Marty Biagi went down under and signed 23-year-old Australian Rules football player James Rendell to be the Irish punter this season. We share our thoughts on the Irish going this route as opposed to the transfer portal.

* The transfer portal came and went this week, and all four Notre Dame quarterbacks are still on the roster. On a scale of 1 to 10...How surprised are we that they’re all still here?

* An Indianapolis Star writer is catching a lot of grief for writing a column this week saying Caitlin Clark could do for the WNBA what Larry Bird did for the NBA. Do you Buy or Sell the idea that Clark could be her league’s Bird?

* Fill-in the blank…It’s BLANK that the University of Houston plans to wear powder blue uniforms that are very similar to the ones worn by the defunct Houston Oilers. They wore them in their season opener last year, and the NFL threatened to sue them because the league said they were “blatantly copying” the Oilers’ uniforms.

* What's the best landing spot for the Inside The NBA studio crew of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith if TNT loses the NBA broadcasting rights?

* Mike Trout is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury but it’s barely a blip on the sports radar. Do you think it’s because Trout is boring, he plays for the Angels or just because it’s baseball and nobody cares?

* Markus Burton entered his name on the NBA early entry list last month. How confident is Noie that Burton will return to the Irish for his sophomore season?

Rapid Fire topics include:

* Fill-in the blank...The most intriguing player on Notre Dame’s roster is BLANK.

* From a listener: Could Notre Dame put Jordan Faison (lacrosse) and Drayk Bowen (baseball) on scholarships with those sports to help them get to the 85-man roster limit?

* We recently talked about Knute Rockne’s first home in South Bend being moved to make way for new housing being built. Over the weekend, Knute Rockne was literally moved from Highland cemetery and he, his wife and son and grandsons were reburied at Notre Dame. Thoughts on this.

* Fill-in the blank...If you could change any rule in sports it would be BLANK.

* Ryne Sandberg is going to be the fifth Chicago Cub to get a statue outside Wrigley Field. Are you good with that?

* Does someone from the 2016 championship team need a statue?

The portal window has come and gone but Notre Dame surprisingly saw very few departures. In this segment Bryan discusses why that is, what it says about Notre Dame and how Marcus Freeman/Chad Bowden are masterfully handling the portal to make the Irish a much stronger football team.

Notre Dame should have an outstanding defense in 2024, but there are still areas that must be improved and questions that must get answered if the Irish are going to build on what it did last season.
