A review of research on feedback asserts that praise can focus the learner on extrinsic rewards, thus dampening intrinsic drive for mastery. We talk about some of the nuances of the issue, including the timing of the feedback. In addition, we provide some real practical recommendations on how to give direct feedback that players will hear and internalize, while not making them extrinsically focused or distracting them from learning.
