Peter Barkhammar
Eco Region Indonesia
A catalyst for big change
Perter’s probably one of the coolest dude you’ll ever meet. All the way from Sweden he’s the founding father of Eco Regions Indonesia. His baby has grown up and is having a massive positive impact of it’s own.
Peter Barkhammar Co-founder – Eco Regions Indonesia Regional Development
A masterful connector of people and visionary of projects, Peter Barkhammar, brought the main founders of the project, John Higson and I Gusti Putu Ekadana, together and catalyzed the beginning of an inspiring vision that has now become Eco Regions Indonesia.
Peter lived and worked in Asia for over 20 years and has a large network of local contacts. His chief skills lie in liaising with stakeholders rom top levels of business and government to local communities. On a local level Peter initiated the Green Lombok Program for NTB, Clean Lombok Campaign together with the Department of Sanitation (Kota Mataram, NTB), and the Campus Go Green Project in conjunction with Mataram University.
Soon after the first meeting between Pak Ekadana, John, and Peter, there was an opportunity to meet with the government authorities of the Regency of South East Lombok to further discuss the vision of a sustainable tourism in Lombok. After witnessing the degradation that tourism caused on the neighboring island of Bali, it was no wonder the reaction of the Regency was extremely positive; they were immediately ready to support new sustainable tourism development that would make a positive impact in East Lombok. The head of the Regency, Pak Sukiman, enthusiastically asked the golden question, “When do we start?”
From that point onwards, several key components of the project began to fall into place and support for the project sprung up across the globe, starting in Indonesia and reaching all the way to Scandinavia.
The Lombok Regency offered a large area of land in South East Lombok, on the Pemongkong peninsula, as the foundational location for establishing the EcoRegion.
Europe’s top sustainability experts, including the renowned Joachim Eble, showed strong interest and commitment to the project by visiting the area to partake in the initial planning session, which was funded by a Swedish funding agency. Some of Asia’s top sustainability experts also accepted the invitation to partake in project, bringing their local knowledge and experience to the mix.
And so the story unfolds, from a meeting of the minds exploring a shared vision to the gathering of global tribes bringing resources together to partake in the development of Asia’s largest EcoRegion.
