Why are we drawn to fairy tales from childhood to adulthood? Join Mary McMyne, author of "The Book of Gothel" (a retelling of Rapunzel from the witch's point of view), and Andrew as they discuss why fairy tales often fail to give voice to outsiders like witches. Mary's fascination with retelling stories from marginalized perspectives led her down a creative and scholarly path to discover the origin story of Rapunzel's mother, or as the Brothers Grimm tale calls her the "witch."

Mary delves into her creative inspiration and how she was able to hear and write down the voice of her protagonist, Haelewise. For Mary, the magical tower of Gothel and its powerful female community is not a space of entrapment, like so many believe it is, but rather a space of empowerment. Mary reveals why she portrayed the tower as a refuge for outsiders which subverts its original symbolism in the Brothers Grimm "Rapunzel." After discussing "The Book of Gothel," Mary previews her new novel "A Rose By Any Other Name" which centers on Shakespeare's Dark Lady and aims to challenge the misogyny present in these sonnets by giving her a voice.

Don Shewey, a writer, therapist, and pleasure activist who's based in NYC enters the ITBR to provide his critical opinion about QAF episode 11. As the author of "The Paradox of P*rn: Notes on Gay Male S*xual Culture" and most recently "Daddy Lover God: A Sacred Intimate Journey," Don is an expert on gay male culture and psycho-s*xual-spiritual journeys. While he was a fan of the British version of QAF, Don offers a critical perspective of the American version. He explains that in his opinion, it promotes harmful stereotypes and lacks authenticity in its depiction of gay life.

With Andrew, Don explores the show's treatment of aging and intergenerational relationships within the gay community. As an expert on pleasure, adult s*x education, and spiritual practice, Don provides a refreshing perspective on QAF's treatment of relationships, intimacy, and communication.

Dr. Jacob Bloomfield, a historian of gender and sexuality, enters the ITBR to discuss the origin story of his interest in the history of drag performance, specifically male drag performance in Britain during the 1800s. Jacob explains his view that drag is not inherently a queer art form, despite its strong historical connections to LGBTQ+ communities. He argues that drag has had many different meanings and associations over time, and that it should be seen as an art form like any other, rather than being essentialized as solely a queer or progressive expression.

Jacob discusses how drag has adapted and maintained mainstream popularity throughout history and argues that RuPaul's Drag Race should be seen as part of this ongoing tradition of drag's mainstream appeal, rather than as a new phenomenon. Jacob discusses the present-day backlash against drag, particularly from social conservatives, and how this echoes historical debates and critiques of drag as immoral or unsuitable for children.

Hey, true crime friends. This week we are starting a two-part series on the murder of 14-year-old Shoreline School student, Reena Virk. On November 14, 1997, Reena met up with her fellow students at the field behind the school. Towards the end of the night, a group of girls lured her under Craigflower Bridge and brutally attacked her. She managed to get to her feet and make her way home, but she would never make it.

On Feb. 27, 2023, The New Yorker published an article ominously titled "The End of the English Major." This article caused quite a conversation across higher education, and there are many question marks concerning how to study not only English but all Humanities subjects in a moment where liberal arts funding is facing massive cuts, departments are being consolidated, and technology is rapidly changing. One of the major questions concerns a technological specter looming ever larger, Artificial Intelligence.

Dr. Sid Dobrin, an expert on Digital Humanities from the University of Florida, is here to ease our anxieties and tensions regarding the fear of AI taking over the Humanities classroom. Instead of fearing ChatGPT, Sid explores new questions we should be asking that incorporates this technology, rather than trying to get rid of it. He explains that AI, Virtual Reality, and digital media can all be used as tools for thinking about the Humanities. As he reminds us at the beginning of this episode, English departments study what and how people read/write and that means responding to newly emerging technology like AI.

After a brief intermission, we're back with all new episodes of SMASH and so much has been happening in the SMASH universe.
