Today on ITBR, I’m joined by Jon Kinnally, a prolific American TV writer and producer with an extensive background in the world of entertainment! His newest memoir, I’m Prancing as Fast as I Can, is a coming-of-age story about a scared boy, confused about his sexuality, who learns to accept himself, his queerness, and accomplish incredible artistic goals (including writing for the hit show Will & Grace)! It’s also a sort of love letter for those who share the experience of frustration, turbulence, and eventually figure out how to blossom into their queerness. His book makes you both laugh and cry at the same time. Jon also talks about his experiences working on the hit shows Will and Grace and Ugly Betty (to name a few), and what it was like taking Betty Buckley's meditative acting class (oh he also saw the original Carrie Broadway musical so you know I had to ask him about that).

On today’s episode of ITBR, I’m joined by none other than Celia Laskey, a genre-defying author in the queer literature community. On a broad scale, we touch upon the idiosyncrasies of being a closeted celebrity, the thin veil of liberalism in Hollywood, and the constant tokenization of queer people in media. Cover Story tackles the irony of Ali, the lead character, working in Hollywood PR and ironically keeping celebrities in the closet while being a lesbian herself. Then we discuss a few prominent celebrities who may or may not be in the closet...please Swifties don't get upset with us! Her next book is in the works and follows a lesbian experiencing an immaculate conception!

Joining me today on ITBR is Jonathan Parks-Ramage, a critically acclaimed gay author based in LA. As a playwright, screenwriter, journalist and novelist, Jonathan is at the forefront of portraying queer stories and platforming an exciting array of creative voices. His most recent novel, It’s Not The End of The World is a thrilling take on a haunting climate-crisis narrative surrounding a gay couple and their baby shower. There’s so much to dig into, and on today’s episode we discuss even the most intricate details such as heteronormativity in queer spaces and how the irony of writing about an apocalyptic climate crisis inadvertently helped Jonathan cope with the current state of the planet. Jonathan discusses how important and hopeful it is to research historical resistance movements that have succeeded and how we can have hope as a collapsing society and planet.

Join me and Frank Pizzoli as we discuss the evolution of queer literature over the decades! As a longtime queer advocate, writer, and journalist Frank has so much knowledge to share about both his own lived experiences as well as the current state of queer literature in the era of anti-intellectualism. Frank takes us back to growing up gay in Central Pennsylvania and being outspoken as a college student when he participated in the anti-war movement. And that brings us to his thoughts on today's political climate!
Frank explains why he thinks our current American political system is actually encouraging people to abandon critical thinking and why there's a "dumbing down" of the general public. In Frank's new book Passionate Outlier: Gay Writers and Allies on Their Work, he talks with several iconic gay writers about their legacy and what queer literature looks like today. You'll learn all about his conversations with writers like Edmund White, Andrew Holleran, Felice Picano, and Christopher Bram (just to name a few). By the end of our conversation, not only will you learn about the history of queer literature, but you'll also understand how queer authors and their legacies are all around us.

Laury A. Egan comes back onto the podcast to talk about writing and reading short stories, a genre of literature that often gets overshadowed by its older sibling, the novel. Laury is such a wealth of creative information which is why you'll learn why short stories face challenges in the publishing industry even though you would think that our fast-paced culture would love how you can finish a short story in one sitting. We then get into a spirited conversation about why American literary culture is being "dumbed down" and so many bestsellers are easily digestible plot-driven works, instead of rich psychological texts.
You'll find all of Laury's writing on her website: https://www.lauryaegan.com/

Welcome back to Teaching the Humanities in the 21st Century! Today we're joined with Dr. Angela Weisl who you will soon learn is not only an accomplished Medieval Literature scholar but a passionate and very wise/learned (using a Medieval term) English professor. Angela joins us from Seton Hall University where she has taught everything from Literature of the Adolescence (YA Lit), Chaucer (all things The Canterbury Tales), Medieval Lit, and Women's Lit. Angela has been teaching at Seton Hall since 1995 where she has served as both Director of Graduate Studies and the Chair of the English department.
There is so much pedagogical ground that we cover with Angela including why she's so passionate about teaching Medieval Lit. since it allows her to explore contemporary issues through a historical lens. And if you don't know about Beowulf, you definitely will be convinced to read it after this conversation. As the previous chair of the English department, Angela explains how she made clear to both students and colleagues that English majors develop incredible critical thinking, reading, and writing skills that are valuable across many career paths! She also addresses how rapid changes in technology has not only changed our students' learning habits, but it requires us to rethink our own teaching approaches.
To learn more about Angela's scholarship, publications, and teaching, head to her Seton Hall profile: https://www.shu.edu/profiles/angelaweisl.html
If you're a Humanities professor, please email us at [email protected] to possibly be on a future episode! Thanks to the Teaching the Humanities in the 21st Century team: Drs. Andrew Rimby & Jan Balakian, and Ameenah McKiethen
