We're so excited to be joined with poet and professor Dr. Susanna Rich for our first Teaching the Humanities in the 21st Century episode! Susanna begins the conversation by explaining her student-centered, love-driven approach to teaching! She explains that in her classroom it is essential to subvert traditional power dynamics (yes patriarchy she's calling you out)! We get into a really exciting conversation about why critical thinking and creativity are more important than traditional lecturing, rote memorization, and praising the students. For Susanna, English education is about bridging cultures, understanding oneself, and becoming a whole person.

Author Renee Rosen is back for her second time on the podcast to talk all things about her new novel Let's Call Her Barbie. As you'll learn from our conversation, Renee explains why Ruth Handler's invention of Barbie was so compelling and what inspired her fictional retelling of such an entrepreneurial tale. Before exploring the different themes in her novel, Renee shares her thoughts on the 2023 Barbie film and why, in her opinion, the film helped rebrand Barbie as a symbol of modern feminism. You all are in for such an incredible artistic treat since I'm joined with an academic trailblazer, Dr. Jonathan D. Katz. He teaches art history at the University of Pennsylvania and is credited as one of the first founding figures of queer art history! Much of his writing explores gender, sexuality, and desire in the art world, and he talks about his new exhibit The First Homosexuals: The Birth of a New Identity, 1869-1939 currently being shown at Wrightwood 659 in Chicago.

Jonathan wrote one of the first queer art history dissertations, and he explains how this topic actually led to top graduate school programs kicking him out! He describes the conservative and homophobic climate in academia during the Reagan era and the AIDS crisis, when studying queer artists and themes was highly politically charged.

Then, he digs into his Gay and Lesbian Review magazine issue that he guest edited all about The First Homosexuals which features discussions about same-sex desire in both Western and Non-Western cultures. This conversation will definitely open your eyes to how prevalent same-sex desire is in the art world while at the same time so many museums and art historians are still afraid to talk openly about queer themes!

“It’s the witch from next door!” We take a trip to the theater to discuss the iconic filmed production of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, which was recorded for PBS American Playhouse in 1989. In one of our first opportunities to discuss Sondheim and Broadway on the podcast, we are joined by Andrew Rimby from the Ivory Tower Boiler Room. Many people hold the music from Into the Woods dear, and we are fortunate that its original cast was recorded in the spring of 1989. This Fractured Fairy Tales narrative revolves around a childless baker and his wife, who embark on a quest to start a family after a witch places a curse on them. Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and a Rapunzel origin story are interwoven throughout the story. Bernadette Peters embodies the Witch with unparalleled talent, delivering a captivating performance in every moment. Joanna Gleason, in her Tony Award-winning role portrays the Baker’s Wife with incredible grace and depth. Manuel Betancourt is back to talk all about his new book Hello Stranger: Musings on Modern Intimacy which explores chance encounters including online hook-up culture, cruising, and yes even bathhouses! As a culture writer and film critic, Manuel uses so many exciting pop culture examples to analyze queer male modern intimacy, including the film Cruising, Frank O'Hara's poetry, and yes even Stephen Sondheim!

We get into such an interesting conversation about relationship types including friendships, casual connections, throuples, and monogamous ones. Manuel explains how his book challenges monogamy as a default relationship type, and he encourages all of us to question relationship norms!

Then, I pick Manuel's brain about the nostalgia of Queer as Folk and recap episodes 14-15. Are the gay characters still relevant or do they seem like outdated gay stereotypes? You'll have to listen to hear Manuel's opinion!
