This month we are discussing Walt Disney's Masterpiece of a film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, we discuss its historical significance as Disney's first feature-length animated film. We share their personal connections to the film and how it has impacted them over the years.
We also explore how Snow White has influenced and connected to other films, such as The Wizard of Oz and various Snow White retellings and adaptations. We also discuss the challenges faced by voice actors who were tied to specific roles.

Drs. Elizabeth Lewis and Robin Werner are both English professors at the University of New Orleans which makes for quite the gothic setting! They discuss how they first became interested in vampire literature, Robin through her fascination with Anne Rice novels in high school and Elizabeth through her interest in Southern Gothic Literature.

First, Robin and Elizabeth explain their process of putting together the anthology and why Vampire Literature is organized around theme rather than chronology. Then, the discussion turns to the significance of the vampire figure and how the vampire represents themes of power, desire, consent, and blurs the boundaries between human and monster.

We rate our favorite vampire figures from the monstrous Nosferatu to the seductive Lestat. And we discuss why so many gothic villains from vampires to witches speak to issues of race, gender, and sexuality.

Dr. Sheila Liming, a Gilded Age literature (specifically Edith Wharton) scholar, joins me to deep dive HBO's The Gilded Age series. She explains the show's historical accuracies and inaccuracies, and whether or not the show borrows from Wharton's novels like The House of Mirth and The Age of Innocence?

Sheila addresses whether or not she thinks the show is doing a good job at representing social class issues, gender/sexuality conversations, and religious diversity. And don't worry, Sheila and I have many recommendations for the show's creative team! For example, can we please get more risqué topics, a focus on the tension between wealthy and middle-class families, as well as giving the characters more complicated romances?

Dr. Kelly Ross, who specializes in American Gothic literature (yes that means Edgar Allan Poe), talks all things about why she is so drawn to 19th-century literature and her work on African American literature. She explains her recent work on "surveillance" in the works of Poe, Harriet Jacobs, and Charles Ball who are rarely studied together, and how they invert power dynamics.

Kelly talks about how important it is to move beyond venerating traditional canonical (mostly white and male) authors and the importance of including more diverse voices and perspectives. Then, we talk about why current popular culture is interested in themes of "racial surveillance and anxiety," think Hulu's The Other Black Girl or HBO's The Gilded Age!

Of particular interest to Kelly's studies is how The Other Black Girl critiques how publishing prioritizes profits over diversity and sensitivity. Kelly explains that the issues in the publishing industry that the TV show explores, is really similar to academia.

Christian and Andrew discuss the similarities between the drama that both Karen and Ivy face in the show as compared to Marilyn Monroe’s real-life drama like the sacrifices she made for her work and battling off sexual advances from men in the Hollywood industry. Andrew also reads from Marilyn Monroe’s posthumous autobiography, “My Story” and reads: “One day a grand piano arrived at my home, it was out of condition, my mother had bought it second hand, it was for me… years later when I was beginning to earn some money from modeling I started looking for the Frederic March piano, after about a year I found it at an old auction room and bought it” depicting Marilyn’s attachment to gifts from her mother and in spite of reaching various forms of fame and success she could not forget the time she spent with her mother.

To celebrate the SMASH Broadway musical, I am rereleasing all of our SMASH recap episodes!
