After missing a friend's poetry reading, Hayley's friends grew concerned and tried to find her. Sadly, they would be too late. Hayley's murder led to an international manhunt and her murderer still has a warrant out for his trial in the US.

I always love when a Gay and Lesbian Review (G&LR) contributor comes onto the ITBR, and you're all in for such a gay culture treat with theater critic for variety and freelance journalist, Frank Rizzo. Frank discusses his long career as a theater critic, starting in smaller newspapers and working his way up to larger publications like the Hartford Courant. He talks about the different roles he played as a journalist - feature writing, reviewing shows, and reporting on serious arts issues. 

We discuss how the landscape of celebrity interviews has shifted, with the rise of social media and "influencers" making it harder for traditional journalists to get in-depth, personal interviews. Frank reflects on the importance of building relationships with subjects and the craft of writing compelling profiles.

Then, I ask Frank what he thinks of LGBTQ representation in theater and film, and he has so much to say! He discusses how the AIDS crisis impacted the arts and the importance of preserving LGBTQ history and mentoring younger generations. Frank then shares some of the projects he is excited to work on, including articles about the magazine After Dark and the writer Patrick Dennis. He also recommends several recent theater productions he has enjoyed, noting the enthusiastic younger audiences they are attracting.

Presenting a really special holiday Broadway episode with Chad Beguelin who recently wrote his first novel called Showmance! Showmance is about a down-on-his-luck Broadway playwright who is marooned in rural Illinois in this sharply funny queer rom-com.

Chad knows a lot about the Broadway industry since he is a six-time Tony Award nominee, and his Broadway works include The Prom, Disney’s Aladdin, Elf and The Wedding Singer. He also co-wrote the screenplay for The Prom, currently available on Netflix.

Because I can't help myself, I asked Chad about his relationship to Wicked, and he reveals how Stephen Schwartz, the composer, has been such a wonderful mentor to him. He shares how Schwartz provided valuable feedback and guidance during the development of The Wedding Singer and expresses admiration for Wicked's important messages about acceptance.

I ask Chad what he thinks about The Wedding Singer's recent resurgence in popularity with younger audiences and ask him what he thinks about it being revived? And because Laura Benanti's recent interview on That's a Gay Ass Podcast has made headlines (mostly because of her critique of Zachary Levi), I ask Chad what he thinks about Laura apologizing to him and Matthew Sklar (his writing partner) about negative comments she's made about her experience in the musical?

Then, Chad discusses the process of writing his first novel, Showmance, and the differences between the structured, collaborative nature of musical theater and the more solitary, open-ended approach of novel writing.

And finally, Chad shares details about his upcoming musical projects, including a new farce called Horrible People and an adaptation of the novel Something Fabulous, which he describes as a "gay Bridgerton." Throughout the interview, Chad's creative commitment to creating more queer-centric stories and characters shines through!

As a special holiday season episode, here's our book club discussion about Gregory Maguire's novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West." Many of us in the book club had just seen the Broadway musical so discussed the differences between the musical and the novel. What specific plot points from the novel are missing in the Broadway musical and why? We also discuss why the novel is NSFW and definitely not appropriate for young children, even though some of us read it in middle school.

We discuss the political themes in the novel, including the oppression of magic users and the animals. We reveal a major spoiler alert including the bleak ending of the novel...and that's all I'll write so I don't ruin it for those who haven't read the novel. Dr. Andrea Sullivan-Clarke, a Native American philosopher from the Wind Clan of Muscogee Nation of Oklahoma, and an Associate Professor at Indiana University Bloomington, comes on the podcast to confront America's vexed history with teaching and learning about Native American and Indigenous culture. Andrea first explains the importance of listening to how Indigenous communities identify themselves.

For a long time, Andrea explains that America ignored the importance of indigenous philosophies, specifically the art of storytelling, and how storytelling conveys not just lessons but freedom in interpretation. As Andrea says "Oral traditions face losses from colonization, so recovery and sharing remain important" in order to learn the factual history about their communities.

Similarly, Andrea stresses the responsibilities for institutions and scholars to engage in respectful, reciprocal relationships with indigenous communities.
