Nancy Rish was painted a criminal for years. She spent 35 years incarcerated for a crime her abuser committed. Nancy was 26 years old in 1987 when she was arrested for taking part in a plot to kidnap stephen small, who died after being buried alive in a box. In 2022, Nancy is a free woman. After 12,580 days to be exact in prison and many legal loses she is out on parole.

Faye Jacobs was arrested at 16 and convicted in Arkansas for a killing that she never committed.  Although she is a free woman, she is still bound to the system.

Women lifers across the United States and specifically here in the state of New Jersey are serving life without parole sentences for taking the life of their abusers in the act of self defense. Victims should not die in prison for wanting to live.  I hope by using my platform and voice to air the survivors of domestic violence stories and having their voices heard; can affect change in how victims of abuse are treated in the criminal justice system. Prayerfully we can help put an end to the practice of criminalizing self-defense for battered women, and put an end to making survival a crime.

Waif was convicted in 1994 for a 1990 murder he did not commit. Walif was convicted solely on the testimony of one witness. He was sentenced to 30 years to life in Rahway state prison known as eastern state prison. The witness has given written affidavits and taken a polygraph saying  that his original testimonies were false.  That leaves zero evidence against Walif Smith. No witness, no physical evidence, no DNA, no motive, in fact nothing tying him to the crime.  Yet, Walif  is currently serving a 30-year to life sentence for a crime he had no part in.

Boris Franklin a formerly incarcerated individual who served 11 years in prison and is now a Community Organizer with @njtogether.org .  Boris graduated Rutgers University in New Brunswick with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Psychology.  Boris is an Instructor for Rutgers University’s TEEM gateway,  a work ready program for at risk youth.  He sits on the board of the “New Jersey Prison Reentry Program”, he is also a visiting fellow at the Global Center for Advanced Studies in Brooklyn, and an advocate for prison reform and social justice.  He is the author of The Poetic Side of a Man’s Mind, published in 2007, as well as an author and actor in the play “Caged”  recently produced and performed at the Passage Theatre in Trenton NJ.
