The Author

Former U.S. Congressman and Governor for North Carolina.

Jim Martin is a Princeton PhD organic chemist who taught at prestigious Davidson College, his alma mater. During that time, he played principal tuba in the Charlotte Symphony and officiated high school football. Drawn to politics as a precinct worker, he was elected three times as county commissioner, six times to the U.S. Congress, and twice as Governor of North Carolina. After twenty-six years of public service, he returned to his scientific roots in private life to serve as vice president of medical research at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He and his wife Dottie have three children and five grandchildren.

The Book

Revelation through science is written for the educated non-scientist who maybe troubled by apparent conflicts between science and religion. Are science and faith incompatible? Astronomers, physicists, and biologists have now shown that the more deeply science probes nature, the more it reveals evidence pointing us to God. After reviewing concepts from those fields, Revelation Through Science adds new material from chemistry. It describes organic structures that are profoundly vital for life, yet too complex for self-assembly without some guiding principle. It should lift the burden from believers and seekers to realise that science is not the enemy of faith.

We had a wonderful discussion, you can view it here:

There are nineteen chapters in this thought-provoking book, split into four parts. The purpose of this podcast interview is to give you an insight to the overall theme Dr Martin is talking about; enough to whet your appetite for you to feel the need to investigate in full his viewpoints on the subject matter of science verses religion from an organic chemist’s approach. So, we’re going to dip in and out of various sections which will intrigue you at best like it did me when I first looked at the book.

Part one

Chapter one: Creation and the Bible. Here Dr Martin touches on areas like Theological Reflections.

Chapter four: Revelation Through Astronomy, where topics like, When Time Began, The Dark Ages, Serendipitous Echo of the Big Bang, and Quasar and Black Holes are touched upon.

Part Two

Chapter Seven: Charles Darwin (1806-1882). Here Dr Martin reflects on The Theory of Evolution, Domestic Darwin, Herbert Spencer and Francis Galton, and much more.

Chapter Nine: The scopes “Monkey Trial.” Here Dr Martin discusses Dayton, Tennessee, 1925.

Part Three

Chapter Eleven: The Age of the Earth, where Dr Martin speaks about Geologic Time as well as Earth is not Ageless, But Very Old along with other intriguing topics.

Chapter Fourteen: Revelation Through Organic Chemistry, covering such areas as Hydrogen bonding with both Water and Hydrogen, plus Optical Activity and Louis Pasteur.

Part Four

Chapter Seventeen: Are we Alone? Here Dr Martin raises some interesting topical debates like, Who’s on Mars? Searching for Extra-Terrestrials, Suitable Planets and Drake’s Formula.

This is a fascinating book, it’s not a bedtime read, it was never intended to be that it’s a thought-provoking book and you may not agree with all of Dr Martin’s thinking’s, points of view, well that’s fine!  For the book was written to bring about conscientious debate. Could complex life possibly arise by unguided chance?
