  • Ep.14 He Said "Oyasumi" to a Shop Clerk and They Laughed

    🗒️ Transcript 🗒️

Hello everyone. It's time for the Japanese Life Daily Podcast.

This podcast is a podcast where I talk about everyday life in Japan in simple Japanese.

I am Takashi, the host of this podcast.

I teach Japanese online and do podcasts.

Today I will talk about the topic "I said 'Oyasumi' (Good night) and got laughed at."

This is a request from one of my followers.

Yes, my follower is a foreigner.

    They traveled to Japan.

And then they went to a convenience store.

When they were going home after shopping at the convenience store, they said "Oyasumi" (Good night).

Then, apparently, the shop staff laughed.

Because they are a foreigner, they meant "Good night" in English.

I think this is a cultural difference.

American people say things like "Hi" or "Hello" with people at supermarkets or shops.

    「How’s your day?」

You have simple conversations like "How's your day?" or "Goodnight," right.

When I lived in the UK, I always said "Hi" to shop staff.

My friends were saying it too.

But in Japan, we don't say "Konnichiwa" (Hello) to shop staff.

Yeah. So I think this is a cultural difference.

I think the shop staff didn't laugh at my follower, but laughed because the greeting culture is different.

So, for example, what do you say after shopping in Japanese?

There are times when I don't say anything.

But sometimes there are times I say "Arigatou gozaimasu" (Thank you very much) or "Sumimasen" (Excuse me/Thanks).

We don't say "Oyasumi" after buying something at a store.

    Yeah.

If it were English, you might say it.

Or, but in Japanese, we don't say "Thank you. Good night."

So, I think my follower doesn't need to worry about it.

If you wanted to say something, it is good to say "Arigatou gozaimasu" or "Sumimasen."

    あと、英語で Have a good day って言いますよね。

Also, in English, you say "Have a good day," right.

    Japanese people don't say this.

In Japanese, it means "Yoi ichinichi o," but we don't say this to family or friends, and we don't say it to shop staff either.

Today I will talk about illuminations in Japan.

    It's December, isn't it.

    It is incredibly fast.

This year is ending soon too, isn't it.

    But I like December.

There are various fun events, aren't there.

For example, Christmas and winter break.

    And there are illuminations too.

Illuminations start when it becomes December, right.

    It's Christmas illumination.

You can see Christmas trees and beautiful illuminations in various places.

I lived in the UK before. It was quite a while ago.

It is more than 10 years ago.

When I was in the UK, I thought London's illuminations were amazing.

Christmas in the UK was special.

There is a place called Regent Street in particular.

The Christmas illuminations there were incredibly beautiful.

    The atmosphere is very good.

Atmosphere is "at most fear" in English.

Yes, it was a Christmas-like atmosphere.

    It was incredibly beautiful.

Christmas is a very big and important event in the UK, isn't it.

So I didn't think Japanese Christmas illuminations were amazing.

But recently, I hear that Japanese illuminations are popular.

Before, they were talking about Japanese illuminations on the news.

It was news that many people are coming to illuminations in Tokyo Station and Roppongi.

    There, they were interviewing foreigners.

They were interviewing asking, "Why did you come to see Japanese illuminations?"

That person was saying that Japanese illuminations are colorful and beautiful.

And they were saying that the quality of the illuminations is high.

I was watching TV and thought, "Ah, that might be true."

When I was in the UK, I saw various illuminations.

    But the color was orange.

It's kind of an orange-ish color.

But Japanese illuminations have various colors.

For example, white, blue, yellow, red, green, etc.

    The colors change.

Like this, sparkle sparkle sparkle, it changes into various colors.

Today I will talk about the theme of "things I want to do this year."

Yesterday I talked about the theme of "things I could do this year" and "things I couldn't do this year."

    It is already December.

    This year is ending too.

But there are still things I want to do.

So today, it's December, this year, right.

I will talk about what I want to do this year.

    I can't do a lot, right.

Yes, first, the first one is saying "Thank you" to my family.

    Yes, Christmas is coming soon.

    We give presents, right.

When giving a present, you can always say "Thank you."

    It's somehow easy to say.

So I want to give a present and say "Thank you for everything" to my family.

Japanese people don't really say "I love you" or "I like you" to their families.

That's right. But I want to say "Thank you" a lot.

I think Christmas time is a good timing.

I will say "Thank you" to my family.

The second one is eating yakiniku and ramen.

Yes, I want to eat yakiniku and ramen.

I did my best this year.

I started a podcast, did a lot of Japanese support, am writing a Japanese book now, and worked very hard.

So I want to eat delicious food.

    I love yakiniku and ramen.

So, I want to go to a delicious yakiniku restaurant and eat delicious meat.

Well, ramen shops are in various places.

That's right. I want to eat yakiniku.

And the third one is cleaning.

I want to clean my house and my room.

Japan has a culture called "Oosouji" (big cleaning).

I'll say it one more time. It's Oosouji.

Oosouji is doing a lot of cleaning at the end of the year.

We really do a lot of cleaning.

My room, the kitchen, the living room, the bath, the toilet, the veranda and balcony.

    We clean everything.

We do a lot of cleaning and start the new year in a clean house.

This is called "Oosouji" in Japanese culture.

Yes, so I want to clean too.

Today I will talk about the topic of "things I was able to do this year."

    It's already December, isn't it.

This year is ending too. It's fast, isn't it.

    It is incredibly fast.

Always when December comes, I think about things like "I was able to do this this year" or "I couldn't do this this year."

So today, I will talk about what I could do this year and what I couldn't do this year.

First, let's start with what I was able to do this year.

The first one is the podcast.

Yes, I had been thinking that I wanted to start a podcast this year.

I teach Japanese online, but online lessons are short, aren't they.

Since it's like one hour a week or 30 minutes a week, I want you to listen to Japanese every day.

I had been thinking that I wanted to start a podcast.

And now, I was able to start three podcasts. I'm glad.

Japanese Life Daily Podcast is one of them.

Before, the podcast data disappeared, but it's okay.

I will do my best. So, everyone please listen to my podcast every day too.

The second one is traveling to Shikoku.

Shikoku is in the western part of Japan. It is an island.

I wanted to go to Shikoku.

I couldn't go last year. It just didn't work out.

So I was thinking that I wanted to go this year.

There is an incredibly beautiful river in Shikoku.

Because I love nature, I wanted to go to that river.

And this summer, I was able to go.

Truly, there was a lot of nature, it was beautiful, and it was the best.

How should I say, I'm a fan of Shikoku. That's right.

    I love Shikoku.

So I was very happy that I could travel to Shikoku this year.

These two are the things I was able to do this year.

There are many things I couldn't do this year.

Yes, there are more things I couldn't do.

The first one is going to the gym.

    Yes, I am not exercising.

    I have to exercise, don't I.

So I was always thinking that I wanted to go to the gym, but I couldn't go this year either.

I will go next year. I will go, for sure.

The second one is studying English.

Yes, I can speak English a little.

But my vocabulary is a bit small.

So, I am thinking that I want to study English more.

  • Ep.10 It’s Too Warm for December

    🗒️ Transcript 🗒️

Hello everyone. It's time for the Japanese Life Daily Podcast.

This podcast is a podcast that talks about daily life in Japan in simple Japanese.

I am Takashi, the host of this podcast.

I teach Japanese online and make podcasts.

Today I will talk about the topic that it is warm recently.

It has become December. It's winter, isn't it?

But this winter is not cold at all.

It is very warm. It feels like it's not winter somehow.

I was surprised when I was walking in the town the other day.

There was a person walking in a T-shirt. It's December, you know.

I was wearing a jacket, of course.

But I was thinking that it was a little hot.

I was thinking that the weather is nice and warm today.

Then, a person walking was wearing a T-shirt.

    I was really surprised.

I said I was surprised just now, but it is really warm.

    A T-shirt is a bit impossible, but maybe I don't need a jacket.

I like summer better than winter. I prefer it warm.

But I think it is better for December to be cold.

Because there is Christmas. And there is also New Year's.

    We ski and snowboard.

But since it is very warm, it doesn't feel like winter.

I don't really know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

Yeah. I like wearing T-shirts, but after all, I want to wear sweaters and cool jackets in winter.

But I haven't worn a coat yet this year.

I have a black and cool coat.

    It is my favorite coat.

But I can't wear it yet this year.

It is a little too warm.

We call a warm winter "dantou" in Japanese.

It is a slightly difficult word.

I will say it one more time. It is "dantou".

I was watching the news before.

They were saying on the news that it is a warm winter this year.

Yeah, it's kind of a complex feeling.

I like it warm, you know.

But the image of winter is that it is incredibly cold and you get warm inside a Japanese kotatsu, isn't it?

    So it feels strange.

But, since December has started now, it might become cold next month.

The weather in Japan recently is very good, and it is warm even though it is winter.

    How are you, everyone?

    I’m doing very well.

Recently it’s been warm and the weather is nice.

So when I go to work or go to the park, it feels really good.

Autumn really is a great season, isn’t it?

So today, I’ll talk about sales in Japan.

Do you all know what a “sale” is?

A sale is when things become cheaper.

When department stores or clothing shops make things cheaper, we call it a sale.

Clothes, shoes, furniture, electronics—these become cheaper.

Yes, recently there was the Black Friday sale.

Sales are only cheap for a short time.

    Japan has many sales.

For example, Black Friday, the New Year’s sale, Christmas sales, etc.

Do you all know what “hatsuuri” (New Year’s first sale) is?

Hatsuuri is the sale at the beginning of the new year.

    It happens in January.

It often starts on January 2nd or 3rd.

Yes, in Japan, the New Year's sale and Christmas sales are especially popular.

Recently, Black Friday sales are also popular.

Yes, the Black Friday sale was held recently.

I went to the department store, and there were many people.

There were really a lot of people.

Many people go to buy discounted items.

Black Friday had so many people.

    I didn’t buy anything.

But I went to the New Year’s sale last year.

Yes, I bought a vacuum cleaner at the New Year’s sale.

It’s a really good vacuum cleaner, so I’m really happy.

Shopping makes you feel happy, doesn’t it?

That’s why everyone enjoys shopping during sales.

    It feels nice, doesn’t it?

So during sales, I go to department stores or clothing shops.

Because it makes me feel good.

And recently I often buy things during online sales.

    These are online shopping sales.

For example, the Amazon Prime Sale.

    Amazon is online shopping.

Yes, I often buy things during Amazon’s sales.

    They’re pretty cheap.

And because it’s online shopping, there are many different things.

So I look at Amazon’s website and end up buying all sorts of things.

I really buy things right away.

    So everyone, please be careful.

Japan’s Halloween is… well, you know.

It feels like a big party.

Especially Halloween in Shibuya is famous.

Today I’ll talk about my recommended cafés.

This topic is a request from Dassie.

    Thank you always, Dassie.

    Yes, earlier I introduced myself.

When I introduced myself, I said I like coffee.

Then Dasshy commented “Please tell me about your recommended cafés.”

So today I’ll talk about my recommended cafés.

I’ll talk about three cafés, all in Tokyo.

    They’re cafés in Tokyo.

The first recommendation is Fuglen Coffee.

I’ll say it again: Fuglen Coffee.

    Fuglen Coffee is near Shibuya.

But it’s about 10–15 minutes on foot from Shibuya.

    It’s a very stylish café.

First, the coffee here is really good, but the atmosphere is also nice.

The interior is very stylish and cool.

    There are counters and sofas.

The size of the shop is just right.

Not too big, not too small.

There are always many customers, so it’s lively.

I like the lively vibe, but what I like most is drinking coffee outside.

On nice days, I drink coffee outside.

Next to the café there’s a small street where various people pass by.

Sometimes people walk with cute pets, so it’s really fun.

So Fuglen Coffee has great coffee and a really good atmosphere.

The second one is Onibus Coffee.

    Onibus Coffee is in Tokyo.

I think there is more than one Onibus Coffee.

    They have multiple locations.

But I go to the Onibus Coffee near Nakameguro Station.

Onibus Coffee is also highly recommended.

It’s a very small café, but it’s always crowded.

The staff always tell you their recommended coffee.

When you’re thinking “What should I drink today?”, they tell you “This one is recommended.”

    It’s a very friendly café.

I often drink coffee outside, and there’s a lot of greenery outside this café.

Trees, flowers, etc. A nice atmosphere.

    The outdoor seating isn’t big.

    But that’s what’s nice.

You can talk to the people next to you.

Yes, these sports manga belong to the “youth” genre.

    I’ll say it again.

    It’s called “seishun-mono.”

You often hear this term in Japanese anime and manga.

What kind of genre do you think it is?

    “Seishun” means “youth.”

    “Mono” means “genre” or “type.”

So “seishun-mono” means a genre themed around youth.

So it is a genre where young people work hard at sports or fall in love.

“I’ll do my best,” “Please do your best.”

    My students study Japanese.

So I often tell them “Do your best studying!”

Japanese people like the “ganbaru” culture.

    I also like this genre.

    Yes, I like it.

Seeing characters trying hard feels inspiring.

    I like it.

It reminds me of my own youth.

    Yes, that’s right.

I played ice hockey in college.

    Yes.

We weren’t very strong, but we worked hard together.

    That was youth.

    Yes, we lost matches.

    When we lost, I cried.

    Yes, I cried.

My youth and youth manga feel similar, or the same.

They make me remember my youth.

I think many people feel the same.

When they were students, they hung out with friends.

Fell in love, worked hard in sports or studies.

Because they feel similar to their own youth, the genre is popular.

    How about you?

Do you have a similar “youth culture” in your country?
