The estate’s executors have repeatedly told courts and the administrators of the victims’ compensation fund that the estate lacks sufficient liquid cash to promptly pay all claims and legal obligations. For example, in early 2021 the administrators of the victims’ fund paused new payments after being notified the estate “did not have sufficient liquidity to fully satisfy” further compensation requests.

The root of the claimed challenge is that while the estate holds substantial illiquid or hard-to-value assets (real estate, trusts, offshore holdings), large sums have already been paid out in settlements and fees, leaving limited readily accessible funds. At the same time, the valuations of major assets (such as his Manhattan townhouse and the Caribbean islands) have either dropped or remain under court-supervision, meaning converting assets to cash quickly is complicated and constrained by legal, tax and trust structures.

In April 2022, when Elon Musk made his $43–44 billion bid to buy Twitter, Apollo Global Management quickly surfaced as one of the major Wall Street firms exploring involvement. The withdrawal highlighted Apollo’s risk-management approach—balancing bold investment ambition with caution toward volatile technology assets. In the end, Musk closed the acquisition without Apollo’s participation, and the firm publicly moved on to other digital-media ventures.

When Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested in July 2020, then–Attorney General William Barr publicly praised federal agents for bringing her into custody and assured the public that the Department of Justice would pursue Epstein’s network “wherever the evidence led.” In interviews with ABC News and others, Barr said he was “very happy we were able to get Miss Maxwell,” adding that the government was still seeking cooperation from figures such as Prince Andrew. He also personally ordered the Bureau of Prisons to install “redundant monitoring systems” around Maxwell’s detention, stating he wanted to ensure there would be no repeat of what happened with Jeffrey Epstein. This came just months after Barr had described Epstein’s death as “a perfect storm of screw-ups,” promising the Justice Department would “continue to pursue anyone who was complicit.”


Barr’s remarks, made during the Trump administration, were meant to project accountability but drew mixed reactions. Some legal observers noted that Barr—whose father once hired Epstein at the Dalton School decades earlier—was attempting to rehabilitate the DOJ’s image after widespread outrage over Epstein’s 2019 death in federal custody. Nonetheless, Barr repeatedly emphasized that Maxwell’s prosecution was part of a “vigorously continuing” investigation, assuring the public that “no one is above the law.” His statements framed Maxwell as the living proof of the DOJ’s commitment to finishing what Epstein’s death had interrupted.

Prince Andrew’s public image has long been marred by a pattern of behavior many royal watchers have described as arrogant, tone-deaf, and “oaf-like.” His reputation as the “party prince” stretches back decades, when stories of crude jokes, inappropriate remarks, and entitled conduct at social functions routinely made tabloid headlines. Former palace staff and event organizers have recounted occasions where Andrew fixated on women in professional settings, ignored protocol, and carried himself with an air of petulant superiority. In one 2024 New York Post report, a former events manager alleged that Andrew spent an entire official engagement staring at her chest and refusing to address senior staff, leaving her “uncomfortable and disgusted.” Even within royal circles, his brashness and lack of tact earned him the nickname “Randy Andy,” a moniker that resurfaced as his Epstein scandal deepened.


His oafishness reached its defining moment during the 2019 BBC Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis. Intended as a chance to clear his name, it instead became a global spectacle of hubris and absurdity. From his bizarre claim of being unable to sweat due to an “adrenaline overdose” in the Falklands War, to his tone-deaf insistence that spending time with Jeffrey Epstein was “the honorable thing to do,” Andrew appeared oblivious to how grotesquely out of touch he seemed. Critics called the performance catastrophic — a portrait of a man whose arrogance had eclipsed self-awareness. Since then, royal insiders have said the Duke’s private demeanor remains much the same: defensive, graceless, and utterly baffled by his own downfall.

In February 2021, Maxwell made her third formal bid for pre-trial release, offering a significantly enhanced bail package and additional concessions aimed at reducing the court’s concerns about flight risk. Her lawyers proposed renouncing her British and French citizenships, pledging around US$22.5 million (plus forms of security) into a monitored account overseen by a retired U.S. federal judge and former U.S. Attorney, allowing only limited personal funds to remain for living and legal-defense expenses. Despite the expanded offer, U.S. District Judge Alison J. Nathan rejected the motion, issuing her third denial on March 22, 2021. In early 2020, it was revealed that Prince Andrew, Duke of York would still receive the long-standing honour of having the bells of Westminster Abbey rung on his birthday (February 19), despite his announcement the prior November that he was stepping back from public duties following his association with Jeffrey Epstein. The decision sparked considerable public backlash, with critics calling the commemoration “crass and offensive” given the ongoing investigations and the prince’s diminished role.

In January 2021, amid the COVID-19 pandemic and continuing reputational damage, news outlets reported that the bell-ringing tribute for Andrew’s 61st birthday was to be cancelled or at least not guaranteed, as the Abbey suspended volunteer ringing and the government clarified that UK-wide flag-flying and other honours would not apply to Andrew due to his step back from duties.
