This episode is different from our typical sports/trading card topics. For the first time on the podcast, Jeli Cards enters the world of comic book collecting! We were lucky to have comic book collector Komikz98 join us for this episode, and she’d his knowledge of all things comics! Comics are fun to read, but can also make you money in the future. You might not make that instant profit like you can with sports cards, but collecting the right issues can benefit you greatly in the long run. Patience is key here!

This episode is all about hockey cards, and how they are undervalued compared to sports like Football, Basketball, and Baseball. We were lucky enough to have hockey fanatic and collector Hockey Town John join us for this weeks episode! His knowledge of not only the sport, but the untapped market that is hockey cards is why we had to bring him on the podcast. He gives his version on why hockey cards aren’t as sought after in the hobby, and gives us a couple players that he’s currently keeping his eye on. This episode John and I discuss how the hobby seems to have gotten away from being a collectors hobby to more of an investment opportunity. Retail product has surged in both the amount of cards printed and how much the product costs today versus what it use to cost a few years back. With the increasing prices of retail product, is it even worth buying anymore? Do hobbyists still buy into sets because they want to collect the cards or do they buy with the intent to resell the cards at a later date? Find out what John and I have to say in this episode!

This episode is perfect for new hobbyists or anyone looking to help grow their business! John and I discuss where to start if you’re new the collecting cards. We used our own examples when we formed Jeli Cards that we thought would be important key topics. The hobby can be overwhelming at times especially because there’s money to be made in just about every sport. However, finding your niche is the most important task you need to accomplish first! What is it that you want to collect? If you try to invest in every sport out there, you may find yourself overwhelmed by the vast amount of cards that just aren’t valuable. We highly suggest you pick a sport and focus solely on that until you gain enough of a profit to venture out. Mistakes will happen which we have plenty to discuss, but always remember it’s the thrill of collecting that kept this hobby alive!

Sports card breaks and TCG breaks have taken the card hobby to a level it’s never been before! Collecting and investing into cards has changed because you no longer have to invest into wax in hopes of pulling a specific player or team. Card breaks give hobbyists the opportunity to invest their money a little bit more wisely without breaking the bank for some of these expensive hobby boxes. Breaks are both entertaining and a great way to meet new hobbyists! There’s no right or wrong answer in which is the better investment: wax or breaks? It all depends on the route you want to take!

John and I discuss on this weeks episode whether or not modern Pokémon sets are still worth the investment in terms of resale value. Pokémon cards have played a prominent role in card collecting which is why the vintage sets/cards are so valuable in the current hobby market. The new Netflix show “King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch” inspired this new episode! John and I are both avid collectors, and a show about collecting definitely didn’t help our desire to buy more cards! This episode John and I discussed the show and what this series might do for the collectibles hobby in the future. Goldin Auctions is arguably the best consignment based company in the hobby industry, and this series highlights why! From game used jerseys to rare sports cards, Goldin invites us into their world. Goldin Auctions has given hobbyists the chance at life changing money, which ultimately will help keep this hobby alive!

John and I have differing opinions on this topic which made for a great discussion! We both see the benefits from either choice you make as long as you’re profiting from the product or card. However, it truly is the million dollar question you have to ask yourself. Quick flips can be a great way to make consistent profit while you continue to grow your business and/or personal collection. Career holds, however, have the potential to give you the biggest return you will ever see on that card! If you have the patience and trust in the player you’re investing in, holding a players card until they become a star can be very beneficial. Either way there’s really no right or wrong answer to this question, you just have to decide what’s more important to you!

Social media can be a great distraction from the real world, and it has played a major role in the Card Hobby! The hobby may not be where it’s at today if it wasn’t for businesses and influencers promoting cards and their markets through informative and creative content. Social Media stars like Card Collector 2 and Leonhart have inspired other hobbyists to chase their dreams within this hobby. They are allowing hobbyists like ourselves to be able to build our Jeli Cards name, and hopefully one day we can do the same for new collectors! This episode John and I discuss the role social media has played, and why we think it has helped keep this hobby alive.

This episode John and I discuss the various selling platforms you could use to list and sell your card collection and/or card investments. We at Jeli Cards primarily use eBay to sell our cards, but we have also used platforms like WhatNot, Instagram, Goldin Auctions, and we have even sold cards at card shows both as a vendor and customer. Each platform has its own advantages, but you need to find the one that best fits you and your hobby goals!
