I had the pleasure of chatting with retired Pennsylvania prison chaplain Henry G. Covert, author of the celebrated book Ministry to the Incarcerated, which I first read in seminary! Before becoming a chaplain, Henry spent nearly two decades working as a police officer and detective…suffice it to say, he has a deep understanding of crime, punishment, and the lasting solution found at the Cross.
The majority of this conversation centers on Henry’s relationship with a condemned man named Keith Zettlemoyer, who requested Henry's presence on the day of his 1995 execution. We discuss the difficult details of Keith's final hours, how Jesus’ finished work should shape the Christian understanding of life and death, the difference between Old Testament and New Testament visions of justice, Henry's personal faith journey, and how we can maintain an active (NOT passive!) journey toward holiness.
