For about a few weeks I have been noticing thoughts coming into my mind about the "what-if's" of my life. Thinking about what if I had lived somewhere else? What if I had never did such and such? These thoughts are very natural to all people as they grow older. I think we cannot help but think those thoughts, and how things could have turned out better or different according to our own surmising. However, I had noticed that these thoughts started to plague me, and it was not at random times.
It happened to be only during that time I would read my Bible in the morning. What started out as natural became empowered by the enemy. I started spending more and more time fending him off of me, making reading difficult. I have been sick for a couple of weeks so my strength was abated. I did not have full force of fighting power. I did what I could in direct prayer to the Lord to help me. Until I started gaining strength and standing my ground.
I started really thinking about all the "what-if's" in times past differently when I read in a letter written by Samuel Rutherford, dated 1640, he speaks of how hard it is to be patient if we allow our thoughts to become stuck "down among the confused rollings and wheels of second causes." By this he means all the times we say, "If only I hadn't been in the wrong place," or "If only I'd gone a different time." He means a subtle temptation to link together earthly causes-and-effects. To fight against this temptation, to escape the confused, grinding, second wheels of this human "logic." Rutherford cries to us from across history: "Look up! Look to the Master-motion and the first wheel."
During the time I read his words I came across this verse in Isaiah 57:15: " For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones." [Who dwell in and inhabit time].
A freedom and lightness came over my soul, and peace flooded in like the shining light of the sun when the shutters are thrown open in a dark room. I then saw that Jesus Christ is, and has always been, and always will be Master of time and eternity. Yours and mine. There are no second causes, no other wheel-house.
"We see hardly one inch of the narrow land of time. To our God, eternity lies open as a meadow." ~Amy Carmichael

Lately I have been very under the weather insomuch that I was barely able to speak at all in my morning prayers. I could not read the word because my eyes hurt so badly. I could only sit in His Presence. I just wanted to be in that posture that I have come to love for most of my life. I thought if I just sit before Him it is where I want to be.
A few days ago while sitting there again, still being mostly unable to speak because of feeling compromised by illness, I said to Him in a whisper, "Lord, I am having trouble speaking, I am too weak." A little while after I heard these words..."to all who love Jesus Christ in sincerity." As the day progressed that verse continued with me, I kept hearing it in my heart. By the end of the day that verse narrowed down to one word, "sincerity."
I thought about it until the following morning. I decided to see what a few of my favorite expositors said about that verse. The original meaning is far stronger, “in-incorruptibility,” a word usually applied to the immortality of heaven. Here in context it evidently means, “with a love immortal and imperishable,” incapable either of corruption or of decay. It directly implies a foretaste of the eternal communion in heaven. It is a sincerity that nothing can draw us off from the love of Christ. It implies an immortal (constant) love. A sincerity of pureness of heart, holy, without the corruption of sin, dedicated and rooted in love.
The idea of what sincerity means to us is that we speak and act with honesty and being real, but not in Greek context. It has all to do with a grace imparted to those who LOVE Jesus Christ in "incorruptibility." So all we do in life is rooted in the love of Jesus Christ and the things we do in common daily life are transformed.
We then do everything backed by the very real, living love of Jesus Christ alive in us. His love transforming everything into incorruptible beauty going ahead into our eternal life. That day when I heard those words from Him, I knew that what He was meaning to me was it was the sincerity, incorruptibility of love in me towards Him that was more accepted than had I spent an hour in verbal praying. This means more to Him than anything.

There was a day that Peter and John went to the temple at the third hour, which was the hour of prayer and sacrifice. As they were walking there was a certain man lame from his mother's womb laying there. He spent all of his life being carried to the Gate Beautiful where he begged for a living every day. As Peter and John walked by that man looked up to them as if to receive something from them. Then Peter fastened his eyes on him, and John said, "Look on us." That was the moment the power of the Holy Spirit was moving.
"Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk." Can't you just see all the people stopping and watching what was happening? These people were well acquainted with the lame man. They must have been stunned to hear these words spoken to him. What is more, the name of Jesus Christ, which was a name most of the people opposed.
I believe that these two men Peter and John were men who were ever looking to Jesus. Their eyes always fastened on Him. Therefore were they able to say "look on us." They were ready-men who were alive in Christ. That lame man was taken by his right hand and arose, then leaped up, walked, and followed them into the temple. No one ever went into the temple that way, but this man did. It was also said of him that "he held them, and "all the people saw him walking and leaping and praising God."
This is such a depiction of true service and discipleship in the Lord. If you fasten your eyes on the Lord then you will be always ready in a moment to fasten them on the person Jesus sees in your day to day life. If you do not fasten your eyes on the Lord, then do not expect to be much use to Him. You will only be a little trickle of water in the dry cups of the thirsty, rather than a life-giving stream of His loving mercy flooding upon their dry grounds.
“Does it make sense to pray for guidance about the future if we are not obeying in the thing that lies before us today? How many momentous events in Scripture depended on one person's seemingly small act of obedience! Rest assured: Do what God tells you to do now, and, depend upon it, you will be shown what to do next.” ― Elisabeth Elliot, Quest for Love: True Stories of Passion and Purity

This morning I woke up feeling fine. I went out to my living room to sit before the Lord in the stillness of the very early morning. I had a good time of prayer and then read my Bible. As the morning was wearing on I started to feel that sense of my own weakness. As the hours progressed I felt as if a dark cloud came over me. I then started to think about the touch of Jesus Christ.
Thoughts of how God had touched certain people in the Bible. How everyone He touched in fact was at their lowest point in life. Some were at the end of their lives from disease. Others were falling down under their own human weakness and feelings of being worthless and insignificant. There were those who wanted to die out of depression and losses.
Every person that God touched was strengthened in heart, mind and body. Those who were ordinary people like us, were literally touched by the hand of Jesus Christ and were given new lives. Even in the Old Testament, men and women were touched by God in tender, intimate ways. And every time, new life was breathed into them.
Perhaps today you are in that place of feeing insignificant and having no worth. If that is you, then you need a touch from Jesus Christ. Something always happens when He gives that much needed touch. All it takes is one touch from Him, and darkness goes out, and His light and life flood in.
The One who holds the seven stars in His right hand, laid that same hand upon John who "fell down at His feet as though dead." Then Jesus told him immediately, Fear not! Isn't it beautiful that there was no rebuke at all for their human weakness? And there never is a rebuke for our weaknesses either. He comforts. He lays His right hand on the soul that is wounded from toil, weariness, and fears of every kind. And the one He touches is as if that person were the only soul in all the universe. Jesus will touch you, even now.

Many are aware of who Nicodemus is in the Bible. After all John chapter three is the one where we first read about him. How he went to Jesus by night for a private meeting. Where Jesus spoke solely about being born again. When he enters into where Jesus was staying, he says, "Rabbi, we know thou art a teacher come from God for no man can do the miracles that thou doest except God be with him." Notice he said "we" though he came alone. Jesus only spoke to him about salvation.
This "master of Israel" was a member of the highest ruling counsel in Israel called the Sanhedrin. Yet in that time he spent that night with Jesus, he became like a little child and marveled. We do not hear about him again until later when he was standing up for Christ in the Sanhedrin. Something was happening to Nicodemus. His meeting with Jesus that night was penetrating. The power of the Holy Spirit filling the room. There was no one that got around the person of Jesus without the Presence of the Holy Spirit affecting them.
We hear about Nicodemus the third time after Jesus gave up the ghost and died on the cross. Now we see Nicodemus coming into the room of Pontius Pilate with Joseph of Arimathea boldly asking for the body of Jesus. They were given permission to take His body down from the cross. We read that Nicodemus then came with 100 pounds of burial spices.
These men wound the body of Jesus with those spices but not the entire 100 pounds of the spices. Only so much could fit within the bandages. It is noted that there were about 75 pounds left of those spices. Which a couple of the best theologians say they laid His body on. Or either laid those spices around the tomb. Therefore causing Jesus burial chamber to be filled up with a thick aroma of those spices after being sealed.
That Nicodemus who came to Jesus by night, now boldly and openly comes by day. He came first at night to the living Jesus, then by day to his crucified Messiah. I believe Nicodemus received salvation afterwards and was born again. Then when when it came time for him to die he entered into the light of Christ's glory forever. Into "a city whose builder and Maker is God." This is what happens to those who go out of their way to get to Jesus and becoming like little children. Once they do, they are never the same ever again. Be like Nicodemus. Be born again and enter into your eternal life.
"The moment we recognize our complete weakness and our dependence upon Him will be the very moment that the Spirit of God will exhibit His power." ~Oswald Chambers

During a time in my life many years ago I was in a long term devastation. I felt forsaken and abandoned. I had come across a verse in Psalm 27:10 that read, "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord took me up." In that very moment when I read those words they went straight into my heart and life sprang into it. I knew that God had spoken to me by that living word. I knew He was letting me know that He was with me all along, and that He had taken me up long ago.
Many years later after God had healed my life and "brought up my life from the sides of the pit," I was making the bed and remembering that verse. With the remembering of that verse, I was going through my mind the memories of all the rejection, abandonment and the being forsaken going back to childhood.
I was thanking Him in a way that was like thanking someone who had given help only for a time frame when I needed it the most. My thanking Him was saying thank you to a Person who had "gotten me to the other side" so to speak. Like the angel who appeared to Peter in prison. When he told him to get up, and the angel opened the prison door, and they both went out into the street and the angel departed from him.
As I thought those words in my heart I heard the Lord speak to me saying, "When I take up a persons life that has been forsaken, I take them up for the rest of their lives." Still looking back I understand more today than those years now past. He not only takes up a person's life at some point. But He takes up all that concerns them in detail from then on. Their whole life is now taken up by our God and He continues to beautify and heal it. Furthermore, I see that it is not just about a father and mother forsaking their children.
There are many people out there where they have been forsaken by their spouse, their children, a most trusted friend. There are many circumstances of being forsaken. However, it is then that Jesus Christ will take up that person and all that pertains to their entire life till their blessed end. This life is transitory. One day this life will end for each of us. Christ has taken up His cross and died for us. Therefore we forsake this world in exchange for the other one. "For He sayeth I will never leave thee nor forsake thee not even until the end of the world."
“God will never disappoint us… If deep in our hearts we suspect that God does not love us and cannot manage our affairs as well as we can, we certainly will not submit to His discipline. …To the unbeliever the fact of suffering only convinces him that God is not to be trusted, does not love us. To the believer, the opposite is true.” ― Elisabeth Elliot, Discipline: The Glad Surrender

In devotions I came across this verse in Psalm 78:9-10, "The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; and forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them." I wondered why this great and mighty army being armed and carrying bows would turn back in the day of battle. What kind of army does that? Especially in the very day of battle. Typically, in any battle if an army turns away, they battle it out until one turns away out of defeat.
They had the appearance of force and power, but they stood for nothing. The warriors of Israel were powerful, potent, expert in every weapon of warfare, and fearsome. But there was decay that lead to deadness. They slowly eroded away from keeping the covenant of God and regarded it as nothing. Which caused them to refuse to walk in God's laws He lovingly gave them for their blessing and protection. They further downgraded into forgetting His works and mighty wonders He had done.
What I saw was what the religious landscape of this nation has become. They fit the exact picture of the children of Ephraim. The great multitudes of believers are the children of God who have been given everything. Yet over a long period of time this generation has become those who stand for nothing though given everything.
There is a terrifying peril of lowering standards. God wants not only courage and strength He wants the sweetness of a one on one relationship with His children. It is really sad when I think of how many people out there that only look at outward deceptive appearances. They think because of the size of buildings, the brilliance of teachers, keynote conference speakers and religious celebrities, that that is knowing Jesus Christ. And yet they have never once met the risen Lord, have never heard His sweet voice or felt His wonderful, loving Presence. These will turn away in the coming days of battle and stand for nothing because they have never known Him. Make sure who you stand for now before the days of battle begin.
"Courage we shall need, and for the exercise of it we have as much reason as necessary, if we are soldiers of King Jesus." ~Charles Spurgeon

As we go along our walk as believers we should always be under the guidance of God. It says in Proverbs 20:24, "Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?" This life is a journey towards heaven, our eternal life. It is a passage way in the wilderness we must travel and there is no better, faithful guide than Jesus Christ.
There is verse in Psalm 32:8 that reads, "I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye."
God spoke these words to David during a time in his life he needed it most. Most of us focus on God's leading and guiding us in difficult situations when they arise. But the truth of the matter is we need His daily leading and guiding. He leads and guides at times when He illuminates a particular passage. There are other times where there are circumstances that show us the way to take. While at times we can hear His voice within speaking saying "this is the way you are to take."
Though there are so many voices in our heads from this world, His voice has a sound to it like no other. It is distinct, clear and alive. Many people have told of stories where they said they knew they were hearing His voice telling them not to do something, and they passed it off and went ahead into destruction.
I see destination in all of God's leading us through life. There is no random guiding or leading that takes us in circles. It has forward direction that leads us all along appointed paths that lead home. Jesus will Instruct you and teach you in the way you are to go, He will guide you with His eye. He will Lead you and guide you for His namesake, because you have put your trust in His name, therefore the honor of His name is at stake. He will be your guide even unto death. He will guide you with His counsel and afterwards receive you to glory forever and ever.
"If Christ is not all to you He is nothing to you. He will never go into partnership as a part Saviour of men. If He be something He must be everything, and if He be not everything He is nothing to you." ~Charles Spurgeon

Jesus spoke to us about prayer in a few places. The first time He gives direction on how to pray is in Matthew 6:6, "But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."
What I zeroed in on was that part where He said after you enter into your closet, and WHEN you have shut your door then pray. I read 2 Kings chapter 4 about two women. One was a widow with two sons who was over her head in debt, and her sons were about to go into slavery. Her loss was already heavy, and the future looked grave. She was about to lose everything and everyone she loved, and quite possibly edge towards a heartbreaking death of her own. She had no power on her side.
In desperation she called out to Elisha the prophet who asked her what she had left in her house. She told him she only had one pot of oil. After which he told her to go home, and have her son borrow vessels from neighbors. Then told her to shut the door, and pour out oil from her one vessel into all the others. She did, and the oil filled up all the borrowed vessels. Her debt was paid, and there was never a mention again about her sons going into slavery.
There was another woman who built a little room for Elisha who stayed in it every time he was in town. One day, he told the woman who had been childless that she would have a child. Later on she did give birth to a son. One day the child died, and she laid him in Elisha's upper room on his bed, and shut the door. She ran and brought back Elijah who went into the room and shut the door, and prayed and the child was brought back to life. He gave him back to his mother alive and well.
Something happens when a person in great peril, deep pain, heavy suffering and loss goes in alone to their own room and shuts the door and prays. All manner of the outside world is shut out, and the one in prayer is shut in with God.
There is a powerful intensified prayer behind those shut doors. Jesus said that our heavenly Father who sees that person, WILL answer them openly. Today is the day for you to go in and shut the door, wherever that may be and pray. Tell God everything. Look what happened to those two women in the most dire, grim and impossible things. Shut yourself in and pray and receive from Him "fullness of joy" and rest from your Father in Heaven.
"You will observe that the desire to commune with God is intensified by the failure of all other sources of consolation." ~Charles Spurgeon

When the word or term 'sanctification' is brought up, there seems to be a lot of internal consternation about it. Most all believers know what sanctification means. Yet, they feel that is an unobtainable thing. Like King David who said, "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it."
Paul prayed, "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Thessalonians 5:23.
We see there are outward things we should and must do to sanctify ourselves, and this we do. There is a responsibility to our own walk and growth in Christ. "We give attendance to the reading of God's word." We "study to show ourselves approved unto God," and "pray always." "We do good unto them when it is in the power of our hand to do it."
However there is a work of sanctification that only God can do with our entire tripartite man. Our spirit, soul and bodies. We work with God in this on our limited part, but only He can purge and purify us because it is His spiritual work.
Listen, all of us living in this "present evil age" are polluted from it. There are things within and without that we can still detect that are leftovers from a sinful life. No amount of trying to do things can purify spiritual deformities and abnormalities expressed in the spirit, soul and body. There are ways we still process life, things and habits we do, and even words we speak and think that are not yet sanctified by God.
I think of what Paul said in his older age: "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:13.
How I see it is the forgetting those things that are behind, is also a leaving them too. It is a daily leaving this world slowly day by day to go to heaven. Let God the God of Peace sanctify you wholly, spirit, soul and body. He will preserve you blameless unto the coming of the Lord Jesus.
"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live." Can you say that? Are you prepared to let God sanctify you? There is no other way.....there is no other life. His life living in you. The God of peace, ruling and reigning in your heart by One Jesus Christ.
"Sanctification grows out of faith in Jesus Christ. Remember holiness is a flower, not a root; it is not sanctification that saves, but salvation that sanctifies." ~Charles Spurgeon
