When the word or term 'sanctification' is brought up, there seems to be a lot of internal consternation about it. Most all believers know what sanctification means. Yet, they feel that is an unobtainable thing. Like King David who said, "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it."

Paul prayed, "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Thessalonians 5:23.  We see there are outward things we should and must do to sanctify ourselves, and this we do. There is a responsibility to our own walk and growth in Christ. "We give attendance to the reading of God's word." We "study to show ourselves approved unto God," and "pray always." "We do good unto them when it is in the power of our hand to do it."

However there is a work of sanctification that only God can do with our entire tripartite man. Our spirit, soul and bodies. We work with God in this, but only He can purge and purify because it is spiritual work. Listen, all of us living in this "present evil age" are polluted from it. There are things within and without that we can still detect that are leftovers from a sinful life. No amount of trying to do things can purify spiritual deformities and abnormalities expressed in the spirit, soul and body. There are ways we still process life, things and habits we do, and even words we speak and think that are not yet sanctified by God.

I think of what Paul said in his older age:  "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13.  How I see it is the forgetting those things that are behind, is also a leaving them too. It is a daily leaving this world slowly day by day to go to heaven. Let God the God of Peace sanctify you wholly, spirit, soul and body. He will preserve you blameless unto the coming of the Lord Jesus.

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live." Can you say that? Are you prepared to let God sanctify you? There is no other way.....there is no other life. His life living in you. The God of peace, ruling and reigning in your heart by One Jesus Christ.

"Sanctification grows out of faith in Jesus Christ. Remember holiness is a flower, not a root; it is not sanctification that saves, but salvation that sanctifies."  ~Charles Spurgeon

Have you ever experienced spiritual exhaustion? It is much different than just feeling physically exhausted. It is a deep inward drought of living waters that seem to have drained out into the sea. I have many times experienced this spiritual exhaustion but did not realize the way things worked.  What became joy became a burden. What I knew to be life in the Spirit became death in the flesh.

Many of God's people in every walk of life, man and woman, young and old, know what this spiritual exhaustion is. It is not only just for the obvious church leaders and heads of religious governments, and organizations. It is for all of you who have been called into the family of the Household of Faith through salvation. In whatever place you were born again, you went on in it as the servants of Jesus Christ. You may have never regarded yourselves as His servants thinking it is only for the "called" and "sent."

No way, since that day you have been born again, you have been the servants of Jesus Christ. So the days are long, and the years stretch out, and there is a spiritual emptiness. You feel as though you have been drained down to the dregs. The truth is, you have been and you cannot understand why. You cannot give away what you do not have.

If you do not have a fountain of living waters opened up in you, then it is hard work. Everything spiritual seems to be dried up "like a heath in the desert." All is slave labor.  It is time to return to your first love, though you may not even realize that you left Him or how, or when. Go to Him even now, and let yourself fall down upon His feet, lean upon His breast and remain in His loving Presence until He has filled you back up again. Then go all the way with Him up the highest mountains where only He can take you far above and out of the way of this world by His Spirit. He will "give you hinds feet to get up upon thine high mountain." His mountain of spices....

"The entrancing things of a life spent partly for the things of time are just nothing beside those prepared who will go all the way with Him. But let it be all the way. Halfway following leads nowhere."   ~Amy Carmichael

When Paul the Apostle sat in a dark Roman prison awaiting his death the following day, he wrote a letter. He made perfect and good use of his time, right up until the end. He was truly the Lord's servant. In that prison letter he was giving Timothy instructions on pastoralship. At the final ending of that letter Paul speaks these beautiful words in peaceful resignation. He did not allow Timothy or the many Believers who revered and loved him to be dismayed by his sufferings, or shocked at his painful death.

He showed them, by his calm, triumphant language, that to him death was no terror, but only the appointed passage to glory. So he speaks of his life-blood being shed, under the well-known peaceful image of the wine poured out over the sacrifice, the drink offering, the sweet savor unto the Lord. He speaks of His approaching death of agony and shame under a quiet, homely kind of image.

There is great beauty and force in the expressions which he uses for death here. Notice he does not use that word 'death"  but instead calls it an offering and a departure. He thinks of life as a race. That speaks of continuous advance in one direction, He thinks of it as a stewardship. He has kept the faith. Death to a good man or woman, is their release from the imprisonment of this world, and their departure to the enjoyments of another world.

As a Christian, and a minister, Paul had kept the faith, kept the doctrines of the gospel. What comfort will it afford, to be able to speak in this manner toward the end of our days. The more accurate and more forcible translation would be rendered in the Greek, "For I am already being offered." It points to the drink offering of wine which, among the Jews, accompanied the sacrifice. In other words, his being offered up had already been happening. "Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all."

You see, all your life many of you have taken the position of faithfulness. You have born the battles and the heat of the days on earth. You have been persecuted and taken it patiently. In essence, you too have been being offered up to God all along.   A day will come when you will pass from this life into eternal life, from this world into another world....heaven. Let your final words be like Paul's. As you have "offered up your life to the sacrifice and service of others." As you slip into eternity to receive the reward of your inheritance with the saints in light. Life everlasting.

“The best moment of a Christian’s life is his last one, because it is the one that is nearest heaven.” ~Charles Spurgeon

A couple of early mornings ago I lay awake preparing myself to get up and to pray. I began to think about who and what I would pray about. A person came into my mind that I always pray for, and have for a long time. I began to feel discouraged, frustrated, even mad.   My thoughts were about why they are so resistant. Why they will not come to the Lord more fully, and down went my heart. Immediately I heard these words within, "Why are you mad? I am not mad. There is no reason to be mad. I have long patience for them."

Just then I heard those words more fully within from James 5:7, "Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain."

I knew the Lord was speaking to my heart by His own word. I saw that His long patience is deeply rooted in love. His love. The loving heart of our Father in heaven. In that few minutes of discouragement, frustration and anger, I can say there was no love, only hardness of heart, as if their refusal to give their life over to God depended on me.

I was wrong, and He showed me in His loving, patient way towards me. I looked back to my whole life journeying, and saw how great the long patience God had for me when I was full of pride, self involved and spiritually immature. Yet, because He loved me, He waited long. All that frustration and anger fled from me as the darkness flees away when the brilliant light of Christ invades Satan's spiritual darkness.

Amy Carmichael said, "We often make the mistake of trying to press people to accept Jesus before they have really been convicted and awakened to feel their need of a Savior. Or pressing them on to blessings they are not ready for, like the fullness of the Spirit, before they know about cleansing and consecration. It is as if we try to sow before the ground has been broken up by the plowshare, and we try to sow the ground before it has been broken up, and weeded and watered."

If we are to sow into the hard clay soils of their hearts, let us pray to the Lord to send rain, and let the soils of their hearts become soft with His showers. There is no limit for those who seek for Lord to prepare the soils before we even begin to cast seed into their grounds. We cannot ask too much of them, but we can ask all we can from God "who giveth rain in His seasons." Amen.

"This job has been given to me to do. Therefore, it is a gift. Therefore, it is a privilege. Therefore, it is an offering I may make to God. Therefore, it is to be done gladly, if it is done for Him. Here, not somewhere else, I may learn God’s way. In this job, not in some other, God looks for faithfulness.” ― Elisabeth Elliot

I read this morning in Psalm 7 about when David prayed to God about his innocence regarding Cush the Benjamite. Cush the Benjamite had accused David to Saul of treasonable conspiracy against his royal authority. The truth is David was innocent. However, he turns to God and asks Him, "O Lord my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands; if I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is mine enemy:)...."

He did this because he wanted to God to show him if there was anything he might have done that brought about this problem. He even went as far as saying, "let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honor in the dust. Selah." He was ready to take the full correction in order to be right with the Lord. After I read that I came to another part of my reading in John 14:30, " Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me." I saw how these two fit together.

I had been feeling that there has been something standing between me and the Lord. I had been praying for a while about this, and today when I prayed, He answered me in these verses. I was shown the truth in my situation and was then made free.   If you have been feeling as if there is something standing in between you and the Lord, then go to Him now. Ask Him, "Lord is there anything standing in the way between you and Me? Is there anything in me?" The Lord will answer you. Make sure that nothing is found in you when the enemy comes around. Let him only see the Somebody in you, Jesus Christ. Be free today "for ye are in Christ and Christ is God."

"The Word of God I think of as a straight edge, which shows up our own crookedness. We can't really tell how crooked our thinking is until we line it up with the straight edge of Scripture.” ― Elisabeth Elliot

The life of the believer is truly a walk through the wilderness following the Chief Shepherd Jesus Christ. Psalm 23 is a deep, rich study of the whole round Christian life. From the beginning to the end, we see the way we are to go written in a way that is vivid and sure. Brook reveals beautiful insight into the table Christ prepares for us in the presence of our enemies.

The table of bounty, of honor and conquest and the anointing oil of comfort and healing. Followed by a running over cup, which is a depiction of a fountain that overflows continually. And then the assurance of eternal reward.  There is so much life in this message like the "rivers of God that are full of water," that create other little scriptural tributaries and streams of water for all to drink from.

"But observe, "You prepare a table," just as a servant does when she unfolds the fancy tablecloth and displays the ornaments of the feast on a festive occasion. Nothing is hurried, there is no confusion, no disturbance, the enemy is at the door, and yet God prepares a table, and the Christian sits down and eats as if everything were in perfect peace. Oh! the peace which Jehovah gives to his people, even in the midst of the most trying circumstances!"

~Charles Spurgeon - The Pearl of the Psalms: Spurgeon on Psalm 23.

Do you ever feel that there is something stirring deep inside of you? When weeks or months before you felt fine in your walk with the Lord? But now there is a shaking of things, a rumbling within. What you enjoyed before now does not satisfy. It feels as if there is more, and you do not know what to do about it. King David "considered the heavens" and the creation of God. He looked beyond the earthly realm into the heavens and I believe was thinking about what is eternal. It is time to now stretch forth yourself towards heaven, in getting alone with Him. Yes you want to serve the Lord, but you cannot go further "to do good and to communicate" with others, which is a well-pleasing sacrifice to God. Time to go back to the Stream of Fire (Jesus Christ), to be renewed and reinspired to go forth again, to burn with the love of God. Nothing less sufficient to burn the iciness out of you. Bathe afresh in the shining Stream if you are to burn and shine.

When the temple was finished being being built a certain day came for the dedication. King Solomon stood before the altar before the whole congregation with his hands spread out towards heaven and prayed. He spoke about the promise God made to His father David saying that "there shall never fail from before the Lord a man to sit upon his throne." King Solomon prayed a majestic prayer that was for all people in whatever case they were in.

Where they found themselves, in sickness, in dealing with strangers, going out to war, being captured by enemies and sin.  All of which pointed to heaven where God is for their causes. To pray to Him with full assurance that He would answer them in every situation. At the end of his prayer it says that King Solomon then raised himself up because he was kneeling with his hands spread before heaven.

Then he said these words, "Blessed be the Lord, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant." He said that "nothing had failed of all God's good promise," and it struck me. The all-encompassing God will not let one single thing He has said and promised in His word will fail. Because He is the word and He cannot fail. It is impossible for Him to fail.

When a person begins to pray for the cares of their life challenges, it starts out in the early years with standing before Him in prayer. Then after a good long life of standing before His throne in the beginning, at the end of their lives they will find themselves upon their knees with their hands spread towards heaven where the unfailing Christ is. Jeremiah said "His compassions fail not, they are new every morning." That means that as long as you live, there will be an "every morning," and His unfailing compassions will surround you. All that He is can never fail, "He will hear from heaven your prayers and supplications and answer you and maintain your cause."

"God is God. Because he is God, He is worthy of my trust and obedience. I will find rest nowhere but in His holy will that is unspeakably beyond my largest notions of what he is up to.” ― Elisabeth Elliot

There are many people who are solid believers and servants of Jesus Christ who feel alone. They may be surrounded by family and friends but there is a distinct kind of loneliness. It is different than just being alone. It is something felt in the depths of their spirit. Even getting around others makes it worse. It only serves to intensify it.

David said one day, "I watch and am alone like a sparrow upon the roof of the house." That man was a great King, surrounded constantly by people and at times his enemies. There is a kind of feeling alone that opens something up within us that causes us to want nothing and no one else but the Lord.  That kind of aloneness has a work that is personal between God and that person. No one can enter into it. It is rather holy and sacred. After awhile a powerful feeling enters in that makes that person want to stand up and go after God.

They push past everything to get to Him. Their entire being becomes filled up with a determination that is greater than themselves that makes them rise up and meet Him. And no one and nothing can stop them. Something happens that creates a sharpness in that person that makes them stand up and own their own walk. They are changed by it.  Once they have taken that stand, they go on to stand for what and whom they believe in for the rest of their lives. There is great power and freedom in that kind of person.

They stand out amongst the rest, like Saul "who stood head and shoulders above his brethren." The lonely watchmen are like those sparrows who make their perch in the eaves of the temple where prayer is made. They perch alone, and that is where the valiant one's watch and live. It is painful in many ways, yes, but those that live like this in the end would never have it any other way, all would be lost. They live to watch and pray, and serve the Lord in this call.

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." ~King David - Psalm 23:4

There came a time in King David's life where he sinned against God by numbering the warring men of all Israel. God had always given him great victories and now pride had entered into his heart. Joab the general of the armies of Israel went along with the captains who strongly opposed this decision and counseled against doing so. However King David went ahead with it.

When Joab returned with the exact count of all the warring men David's heart was smitten within him by a great conviction. He prayed to God confessing this great sin. Then Gad his seer came in and offered him to choose one of three judgments from God. He chose the three days of pestilence. At the end of the three days seventy-thousand men died. David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord with his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. He heard the voice of the Lord commanding the angel of the Lord to stop.

Then David prayed to God the second time. "And David spake unto the Lord when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly." After this he was told by Gad to offer unto God sacrifices in the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. But David had nothing with him to offer, so Araunah offered to give him the land and the animals. David turned it all down.

"The king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the Lord my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver."

David saw something he never saw before, something from the "other world" and it changed him, and that is why he did not want to offer God anything that did not have premium cost. Nicodemus did the same thing. He was a master of Israel who came to Jesus by night. Later on he came to Pontius Pilate by day boldly with Joseph of Arimathea "craving the body of Jesus." It cost Nicodemus something. He was from that point no longer a master of Israel. Jesus became his Over-Master."  Is your walk in Christ costing you something priceless and costly to give Him? When your eyes are open by the Spirit of revelation of Him, everything changes and you only want to give Him what costs you everything. Is Christ truly your Over-Master? Go to Him and ask Him just like Nicodemus did. He is waiting for you...."even now."

"God has not made this world to be a nest for us, and if we try to make it such for ourselves, he plants thorns in it, so that we may be compelled to mount and find our soul’s true home somewhere else, in a higher and nobler sphere than this poor world can give." ~Charles Spurgeon
