  • Building Our Sales Team
We have big goals and we want to keep our growth going. So we want to hire two salespeople at the same time. We have goals this year to reach $3.5 million and so we need new salespeople to get there.
The sales team is working on a lot of sales strategies and meeting regularly to track KPIs, discuss high-level strategy, and review the CRM.

  • Understanding Your Prospects’ Business: A Powerful Sales Tool
When Kevin is in a sales meeting, he ensures that he understands the prospect’s business. He makes a point of talking more about their business than what Array Digital can do for them. It becomes easy to bring it back around to their business goals and how we can help with those.
Be invested in how their business is running and how they expect it to grow. You’re there to do more than just marketing and focusing on all the aspects of their business will help you to do your job better as well.

  • Knowing When to Pivot During a Pitch
Kevin is deep into sales for both Array Digital and Rival Digital after taking a step back over the past few months, which means he has gotten back into sales calls.
We have a process that we follow during a sales pitch and a slide deck that goes through all of the prospect’s digital marketing. Naturally, a new salesperson will follow from top to bottom because that’s what they’ve been told to do. That information is important for the client to see but you’ve got to know when to stop and change directions to ensure they see the most important information.
Listen to the prospect and switch gears to get into the things that are applicable to them.

  • Getting Serious About Our CRM
At Array Digital, we’ve had a CRM since the beginning but we haven’t used it to its full potential. Erik and Kevin didn’t track every single movement they made because they had large networks and plenty of people to do business with. They logged basic things including emails and correspondence.
With Glen joining the sales team, they continued in this same vein. But with the sales team growing, it’s become more important to have a CRM that’s in tip-top shape.
It’s harder to do when you haven’t been doing it but it becomes a lot easier when you start a new sales team member on it.

  • Introducing The “Array Way”
Kevin and Erik have been talking a lot about how we do things at Array Digital and have realized that just because other businesses do something a certain way, that is not justification for doing it just like them. There should be no “that’s just the way the industry does it.”
For example, we bill our clients by ACH while most other businesses in our industry send an invoice then wait for a check to come in the mail with 60-90 payment terms. We set the expectation early with our customers and it’s not a problem because we did that.
There are also things that we do culture-wise that are the “Array Way.” For example, we have unlimited paid time off. It sounds scary but with a few rules in place, it has gone over very well. We also do things in our culture to ensure individual team members get recognition throughout the day. There are so many more things that we’ve implemented here that define the “Array Way.”

  • If a Client Has an Issue, Pick Up The Phone
This happens often with clients who will email us and seem to be experiencing an issue or are upset about something. It can lead to a ton of back and forth between different people. The best thing to do is to stop with the email stream and pick up the phone.
There’s no way to decipher someone’s tone over email. Most of the time, it is easier to not assume and pick up the phone.

  • KPIs Will Help You Improve For The Better
At both Array Digital and Rival Digital, we have KPIs which stands for Key Performance Indicators. These are numbers we track over time because we want to see improvement over time.
About a year ago, at Array Digital, we had an issue with clients paying us on time. So we started to track late accounts receivable. When we first started tracking this, we were shocked that 20% of our revenue was late. That is not how business should work.
We implemented a lot of new processes in order to get that number down significantly. Listen in for ideas of how to get your clients to pay upfront and reduce the number of late payments.

  • Bad Data Is Crippling Your Decision-Making Ability
Erik likes to make decisions based on data. He often hears people in business saying they “think” this “could” happen and making changes to your company based on what could happen can get iffy. You don’t always have to make decisions based on hard data but it’s a great input that is less risky than guesswork.
We have established centralized systems to collect data. But that data is often wrong which can really affect your decision-making process.

  • Have A Public-Facing Proven Process
When you’re marketing your company, part of your plan should be an established proven process. You want to have it on a website page that can be publicly accessed and it’s basically a page that says, ‘hey, if you’re working with us, this is the process you can expect.’
That process should be unique to your business and allows the prospective client to picture themselves working with your company.

  • Business Model Lessons You Can Implement
Erik has been training for a Half Ironman that he has coming up in June. His fitness resolutions for the year are to train for and do well in the half ironman but also to get a 6-pack. This requires good nutrition. As he’s been focused on nutrition, he’s come across 2 fitness apps with great business models that have inspired him to create products of his own.
The first app is called 6-Pack Abs in 30 Days. Each day, you click on the app and just press start. From there, it shows you exactly what to do with a countdown between each exercise. You do 13-21 exercises back to back. It only takes about 10 minutes and requires no thinking; it tells and shows you exactly what to do.
The other app is called Romwod which he discovered when he used to do Crossfit. It’s similar to the ab app in that it shows you what you’re going to be doing, taking the guesswork out of it.
