In the LGBTQIA+ community, we sadly have a history all too familiar with loss and over the years and have learnt to deal with it often with guidance of those who looked death right in its eyes.

But loss is something we don’t talk about enough until it is thrust at us and we can feel so unprepared for not only dealing with our own grief but that of those around us.

On JOY Breakfast, Rach & Dean were joined by end of life celebrant, podcaster, speaker and consultant Stephanie Longmuir.

Fresh from touring at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, Beks is back in australia with her new single Dangerous which which she performed LIVE on the JOY Breakfast Live Lounge. A talented song writer, DJ and now a pop icon in her own right Rach & Dean have the pleasure of being able to deep delve into who is Beks before their special live performance.  

Every year on 26 May, National Sorry Day remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’. 

The first National Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998,  one year after the Bringing Them Home report was tabled in Parliament. 

Twenty-three years after the Bringing Them Home report and twelve years since the National Apology, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are still 10.6 times more likely than non-Indigenous children to be removed from their families. 

We cannot begin to fix the problems of the present without accepting the truth of our history. Sorry Day asks us to acknowledge the Stolen Generations, and in doing so, reminds us that historical injustice is still an ongoing source of intergenerational trauma for Aboriginal and Torres Islander families, communities, and peoples.

A sobering 42% of our LGBTIQ+ community have experienced intimate partner violence, and 39% have faced violence from a family member. These aren’t just numbers, they’re real people, and we’re in this fight together.

According to the “Sorting It Out” research by Western Sydney University, experiences of homophobia and discrimination can contribute to domestic violence. Non-conformity to masculine stereotypes can lead to stigmatization and increase the risk of violence. It’s a complex issue, but we believe our inclusive ice hockey community can make a difference.
