Today’s case is one of the most bizarre in Germany’s crime history. 

It’s June 2006 and Germany is hosting the World Cup, with millions of people out and about watching the games. 

On June 20th, Frauke Liebs, 21, disappeared without a trace after walking home from an Irish Pub in downtown Paderborn. What’s so disturbing about this, is that Frauke still sent mysterious text messages and called almost every day for a week, before they abruptly stopped.

Her heavily decomposed body was found a few months later, with no leads as to what happened to Frauke.

These are the words from a betrayed wife whose husband seemed to be as bent on her destruction as she was determined to get him back from another woman who took him away.

Betty Broderick’s life became notorious due to a highly publicized case in the late 1980s. She was married to Dan Broderick, a successful attorney, with whom she had four children. The couple's marriage ended in a contentious and acrimonious divorce in the late 1980s, after Dan left Betty for his assistant, Linda Kolkena.

Betty's behavior following the divorce became increasingly erratic and obsessive. She repeatedly harassed her ex-husband and his new wife, even after multiple restraining orders were issued against her. In 1989, Betty Broderick broke into her ex-husband's home and fatally shot both Daniel and Linda as they slept.

The case received widespread media attention and became the subject of books, a TV movie, and a television series. Betty Broderick was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder in 1991 and is still serving a sentence of 32 years to life in prison. Her case continues to fascinate people due to its complex dynamics of marriage, divorce, and revenge.

Laura Parker was a quiet 14 year old girl, who lived with her parents in Lindenhurst, New York. She had been in choir, active in church, and a softball player at her high school. She disappeared on May 25, 1984, but most people believed that she was a runaway. Laura’s parents knew better and wondered where she was, searching everywhere. Four months later, her remains were discovered a few miles from her family home. Her killer has never been found. Around the same time, three other young girls fell victim to disappearances/murders in the same area and it is believed that Laura could be connected to these cases. Sixteen-year-old Theresa Fusco, fifteen-year-old Kelly Morrisey, and nineteen-year-old Jacqueline Martarella were all predicted to have been taken from walking down the same road. 

Laura Parker’s story is a tragic one, because her community wasn’t helpful at the time of her disappearance, and many of the students at the high school were unwilling to talk to the police. There were a great deal of conspiracy theories surrounding her case, and rumors flying around about what had happened to the young teen. People claimed that she had overdosed, while others claimed she was murdered. The police said it was natural causes. But what truly happened to young Laura Parker? It is nearly the fortieth anniversary of Laura’s death, and there are still so many questions surrounding her death.

In June of 1988, 23-year old Philip Fraser started his trek from Anchorage, Alaska to Olympia, Washington - where he was set to start his pre med classes at Evergreen State College. However, a week after he left, his vehicle was found abandoned and set on fire at a car wash in Prince George, British Columbia… and Philip was nowhere to be found…

Not long after Robert Spangler learned he was dying of cancer, detectives came knocking at his door on the chance he had something he might want to get off his chest before the end came.

And he didn’t disappoint them.

Spangler matter-of-factly admitted killing his family in 1978 and pushing his third wife, Donna, to her death at the Grand Canyon 15 years later. The death of his second wife, Sharon, was ruled as suicide and was never investigated.

Death, it seems, had always been an “easy way out” for him.

Hannah Upp, a 23-year-old middle-school teacher in New York City has disappeared three times. The first time was in August 2008 in New York City, where she was found floating in the Hudson River almost three weeks after she went missing. She was suffering from a rare form of amnesia called dissociative fugue. The second time was in September 2013 in Kensington, Maryland, where she went missing for two days and was later found in a creek. The third time was in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in September 2017, where she was reported missing after failing to show up for a scheduled faculty meeting at the local Montessori school where she worked. She was last seen leaving her apartment on September 14, 2017, and has not been seen since.
