Saint Norbert was a reformer, missionary, and founder whose dramatic conversion transformed him from a comfortable nobleman into one of the great spiritual leaders of the twelfth century. He was born around 1080 in what is now Germany and raised among the nobility. Through family connections, he was appointed to important positions at the imperial court and enjoyed the privileges and influence that came with them. Though ordained, he initially lived much like many clerics of his age, more concerned with worldly affairs than with the radical demands of the Gospel.

Everything changed during a violent thunderstorm. According to tradition, Norbert was thrown from his horse when lightning struck nearby. Believing himself on the verge of death, he cried out to God for mercy and resolved to change his life. This experience marked the beginning of a profound conversion. He renounced his former ambitions, embraced a life of penance, and devoted himself entirely to preaching and the reform of the Church.

Norbert traveled throughout Europe as an itinerant preacher, calling clergy and laity alike to repentance and fidelity. His message was often challenging, but it was backed by personal holiness and sacrifice. Seeking to establish a community that would combine the contemplative life with active ministry, he founded the Order of Prémontré, commonly known as the Norbertines or Premonstratensians, in 1120. The order followed the Rule of Saint Augustine and emphasized common prayer, devotion to the Eucharist, pastoral work, and community life.

One of the themes that marked Norbert’s ministry was his deep devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. He vigorously defended the Church’s teaching on the Real Presence at a time when some questioned it. This Eucharistic focus became a lasting characteristic of the order he founded.

Later, Norbert was appointed Archbishop of Magdeburg, where he worked to reform the clergy and strengthen Christian life throughout the region. Although he preferred the simplicity of religious life, he accepted the office out of obedience and carried out his duties with courage and humility.

The Church honors Saint Norbert as a model of conversion and renewal. His life demonstrates that even those deeply immersed in worldly concerns can become powerful instruments of God's grace.

Devotion to Saint Norbert remains especially strong among the Norbertine communities spread throughout the world. His feast day on June 6 is marked with prayers for Church reform, Eucharistic devotion, and perseverance in religious life.

Saint Norbert, faithful reformer and servant of Christ, pray for us.

    What is the SSPX Podcast?
The SSPX Podcast is produced by Angelus Press, which has as its mission the fortification of traditional Catholics so that they can defend the Faith, and reaching out to those who have not yet found Tradition.

    What is the SSPX?
The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood.
Authentic spiritual life, the sacraments, and the traditional liturgy are its primary means of bringing this life of grace to souls.
Although the traditional Latin Mass is the most visible and public expression of the work of the Society, we are committed to defending Catholic Tradition in its entirety: all of Catholic doctrine and morals as the Church has always defended them. What people need is the Catholic Faith, without compromise, with all the truth and beauty which accompanies it.
