Just Another Friday Night

Happy 4th of July Friday Nighters! In what has become a sort of tradition for the JAFN podcast we wanted to cover an American story that represented America to us. In the past we've covered The Punisher tale BORN about Frank Castles' apparent deal with The Devil. This year we are using really 2 great issues by one of our very favorite writers Garth Ennis, who also wrote BORN. And it comes from CM Chucks' favorite comic book story PREACHER. In what really begins in issue #18 "Texas and the Spaceman" and concludes essentially in issue #50 "The Land of Bad Things" are tales of our primary characters father John Custer - one Double A's all time favorite characters and easily one of comics if not all literatures great dads. A United States Marine in Vietnam has some thoughts on why he's there and what America is supposed to mean. For a story written by an Irish author it is a tale that stands up even today. So before the fireworks and hot dogs, hamburgers, and apple pie crack a cold beer with us and let's celebrate the U.S.A. together.

"Hello there!" He is the favorite Jedi of the JAFN podcast. Easily on the Mt. Rushmore of Jedi and Star Wars characters. Sir Alec Guinness first breathed life into the character in 1977 but Ewan McGregor took up the mantle and gave new life to the character. Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and the latest Star Wars installment on Disney+ are the subject of tonight's show! We can't wait to share our thoughts and feelings on this epic 6 part series. Additionally we can't wait to hear what you thought about the return of the Jedi Master - KENOBI!!!

When a young Luke Skywalker first asked Ben Kenobi if he "fought in the Clone Wars," in 1977 - it was as if a million young minds suddenly cried out. What the hell was the Clone Wars?! It sounded amazing! As fans we would have to wait until 2002 for Grand Jedi Master Yoda to let us know that "begun the Clone Wars has," however we still wouldn't see just how Obi-Wan and Anakin fought in these Clone Wars. Our very first taste would not be until November of 2003 and thanks to Cartoon Network and Genndy Tartakovsky. The 4-time Emmy winning series gave so many Star Wars fans joy in the void of another movie. Additionally it introduced iconic characters like Asajj Ventress, Durge, and General Grievous. Additionally it showcased some truly iconic moments such as Anakin holding a red lightsaber, Mace Windu in a full show of power, C-3PO addressing his gold plating, and Anakin being knighted. Tonight we take you into Star Wars: Clone Wars now on Disney+ and pre-dating the popular 2008 series!

Tonight it's a freestyle for the Friday Night Faithful! And we don't mean Stevie B and skating rink music. We don't have a set topic cause there has been a ton - A TON - of pop culture stuff for us to frenzy on! So while we aren't talking a specific topic we want to touch lightly on a little bit of everything! There will certainly be some IN DEPTH episodes coming soon on the Obi-Wan and The Boys season 3 FOR SURE! So hold some of your best stuff for then. In the meantime we've got comics to talk and trailers! And beer and toys! In 1991 seven of the greatest comic artists had an idea. The idea was to jump ship from the big 2 comic books companies in the world Marvel Comics and DC. They had contributed some of the greatest comic book art in the history of comics. These men grew tired however of giving their work to someone else. They wanted to be their own boss - they wanted to create characters that were their own. They had a vision - an Image if you will. Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, Eric Larsen, Jimmy Valentino, and Whilce Portacio. Together these men founded Image Comics and the world of comics would never be the same again. From creations like Spawn, Youngblood, WildC.A.T.S, Savage Dragon all the way to The Walking Dead and Invincible. They have left a mark on the industry that has endured for 30 years. Tonight we want to talk about their rockstar journey which is certainly worthy of movie treatment! However we are also professional podcasters who can appreciate a great piece of pop culture. The HBO Max series Winning Time: The Rise of the Los Angeles Lakers is in fact just that. It's well written. It's really well acted and it's really really well shot. This show is this years Ted Lasso. It's not the same heart but it is heart. And tragedy and triumph. It's a really fantastic show and def worth the watch. John C. Reilly leads a cast of mostly up and comers and we can promise you that you will soon know their names. We see this one headed to winning all the Emmys and continuing the legacy of winning for the Showtime Lakers of the 80s.

It's a mad, mad, world when it comes to Dr. Strange and even more so when he is traversing the multiverse. So we couldn't wait a full week to bring you our thoughts on Marvel's latest fare on the big screen! Sooo ***SPOILERS AHEAD*** If you have NOT seen Doc Strange in the Multiverse of Madness DO NOT we REPEAT DO NOT watch or listen to this episode!!! This is a SPOILER FULL episode on the film!!! We highly encourage to go watch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness! And yes watch WandaVision (and hear our episode on that!) and YES watch What If...? (and hear our TWO episodes on that!!) We promise it will make your viewing all the more pleasurable!! It's a steak medium well and it's better with 2 really nice sides!!! So like the Madness that is the Macho Man Randy Savage (now a Bonesaw cameo from The Madness Macho would have really slayed) here we go head first into the Multiverse!!!

Can't fight the Moon Knight! Sung to the tune of LeAnn Rimes "Can't Fight the Moonlight"? No? Yeah you're probably right referencing early 2000's rom coms isn't the best way to start about the latest Marvel series on Disney+. In fact it seems like something Steven Grant might do. But we can do better than that by inviting the Totally Rad host with the most from the ultimate guide to Christmas in the 80's Gerry D. of the Totally Rad Christmas podcast! Gerry campaigned hard to come on this one and talk Moon Knight and who are we to deny a true fan their chance to express their affections for a character and the show. Plus we are always extremely honored to have him and he's bound to teach us all a thing or two! So let's summon the suit and get into it!

"You're a wizard Harry." Hagrid's words instantly immersed us into a world of wizarding wonder. A phenomenon on it's own as a set of young adult books that propelled author J.K. Rowling into homes abroad and here in the United States. It was almost a given that the stories of Harry Potter would become major motion pictures. And they did not disappoint with a stellar cast set to become household names. A young Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson embarked on a journey that spanned years of their young lives and helped create cultural icons. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter not only spans books and films but has entered into theme parks and most recently completed a prequel series of movies in The Fantastic Beasts series of films. Tonight we're discussing our love for one of the greatest properties in the history of pop culture. Join us as we enter on platform 9 3/4 ready to board the Hogwarts Express to get ourselves sorted into our houses for this episode!

We've never been shy about Our ongoing love affair with the dead and no this isn't about necrophilia (this time...??)! The Walking Dead is in its final season and with season 11 pt 2 finishing 2 weeks ago we realized it was time to get back into one of our all-time favorite shows. We haven't talked TWD since the season 10 finale, Here's Negan and Negan is def back along with Daryl, Carol, Maggie and some of our new faves like Mercer and Princess! We're riding with TWD til the very end and beyond  - just not the world beyond. So let's get back to smashing rotters, walkers, or whatever the hell else you want to call them - it's zombie time again!
