  • 052 How to Build a Better Relationship with your Listener

Hey you. Yeah, you. I'm talking to you. If you've listened to my podcast before then you know that I'm always talking to you. Just you. Wanna know why?

If you want to build a better relationship with your listener, you need to be talking to them individually. I've talked about this before (give episode 29 a listen) but I'm bringing it back up today for two very good reasons.

One, I was inspired by an interview I heard with a radio industry veteran who was retiring after 50 years on the radio. 50 YEARS! You don't get to be on the radio for 50 years unless you build a relationship with your audience. He mentioned in this interview that he felt a real connection with each and every listener. And, he knows they feel that way too.

His secret? You guessed it - he always talked to just one listener.

In the podcast biz (especially in the podcast for profit biz) we get caught up in a lot of these digital marketing tricks to convert more listeners. This episode is here to remind you that the real 'trick' to converting listeners into customers comes down to good old fashioned customer service - and that means talking to your listener on a personal level.

Think you can do that? I know you can. And, I also know that once you do, you'll see a big improvement in the relationship you have with your audience.

Nothing beats 1:1 connections. That's why my 30 Days to a Better Podcast is just you and me working together to make your podcast awesome.

Connect with me today and in just one month, you'll have a better podcast - guaranteed.

  • 051 Are You Focusing on the Wrong Podcast Stats?

Are you guilty of checking your download stats on the daily just to see how popular you are? Are you obsessed with where iTunes ranks your podcast in your niche category? Confess, have you ever checked more than once a day?

I've got news for you… you might be looking at the wrong numbers!

In this episode, I dive into what those stats should mean to you and how to figure out the right numbers to focus on.

Plus, I explain the two camps of podcasting. Do you know which one you're in? If you don't then you really might be focusing on the wrong podcast stats!

Not only do you need to know your camp, and which numbers to focus on but you also need to know when it's time to move on out of that camp and focus on some new numbers.

Sounds complicated, but it's not. I promise. I make it all perfectly clear in this episode. So, hit play and let's see if you're in the right place and looking at the right stats.

Then, meet me at the campfire for some smores and a sing-a-long. You know this one, right. Kumbaya, Podcaster, Kumbaya…

Speaking of feeling all Kumbaya. I decided to bring back my free 15 minute discovery call. It's as simple as it sounds - you get to pick my brain for 15 minutes or so about what's going on with your podcast. Whether you're just starting out or 50 episodes in, I'd love to connect with you.

Oh, sure, we can talk about whether I think I might be able to coach you to a better podcast, but first let's see how much free advice you can get out of me. You might be surprised to hear that I don't offer to coach everyone. Sometimes I can see that they just need a quick tip or some encouragement and they're all set.

Anyway, head to my website - podcast performance coach dot com and book it, daddio.

  • 050 How Greed Can Hurt Your Podcast

    Don't be a sell out!

No, I'm not talking about never accepting money from a sponsor or selling ads on your podcast. I'm talking about treating your audience like a commodity.

I get it. You worked hard to build your audience and you're a starving podcaster making pennies (if you're lucky). But, now that you've earned all of these listeners, don't risk losing them by selling out.

In this episode, I'll give you a VERY clear (and, unsubscribe-worthy) example of how one podcaster let greed and the desire to make money as a podcaster totally destroy his integrity and his listener's trust. Oh, it was bad.

And, I tell you the one SUPER popular marketing technique that could land you in the exact situation - pimping out your audience and pissing them off in a big way.

Plus, I tell you the one question you need to ask yourself before committing to any kind of promotional content. Here's a hint: Bad things happen when you stop thinking about your listener first.

I know that everyone in the podcasting world is constantly telling you that it's all about the hustle. Here's the thing about hustle, you don't want it showing. Nobody wants to feel hustled.

Seriously… did you subscribe to this podcast just so I could hustle you. Rhetorical questions… the answer is Hell NO! So, if you don't love that feeling then you can guess how your audience will feel if you do it to them.

Hold on to your reputations, honor your audience and say no to the desire to sell out.

Now, if you don't know who your audience is, check out Episode 37: Who Are You Talking To? It is my most popular episode for good reason. And if that doesn't clarify things then, grab my 30 Days to a Better Podcast coaching package and we'll figure it out together.

Here are a few more podcasts that will help you build your relationship with your listener (you know, the ones you're not going to sell out…)

    Episode 27: Get Personal

    Episode 41: Maximum Listener Engagement

Episode 29: Why I Talk to One Podcast Listener

    Free Download: Engaging Podcast Blueprint

And, check out Episode 25 on How to Handle Sponsorships for ways you CAN make money from your podcast (ehem, the RIGHT way)

Now, go on. Hit play… you've got a lot of listening to do!

  • 049 How Much Time Should You Budget for Podcasting?

Is podcasting a giant time-suck? It certainly feels like that for a lot of podcasters.

So, are they doing it wrong? Are you doing it wrong? Probably not. In this episode, I breakdown where all that podcasting time goes and what kind of time you should be budgeting for each episode.

Warning to new podcasters - this might be hard to hear. But, you need to hear it because the time commitment is no small thing.

It's a reality that for some reason, not a lot of podcasters talk about. It's definitely something that most newbies are naive about. But, we're going to change that (and maybe help a few of you silently suffering podcasters know that you're not alone - and you're probably not doing it wrong).

I'm not talking about starting a podcast. That's a whole different thing. In this episode, I'm giving you a reality check on the time you'll need to create each episode of your podcast once your podcast has been launched and you're up and running.

I'm not pulling back the curtains to scare any of you off, by the way - this is all about giving you a reality check so that you can be realistic when it comes to budgeting time for your podcast. If you know how much time to set aside each week or month, then your podcast has a much better chance of making it past episode 10.

Of course, it depends on the length and format of your show. But, there are some things that are most likely to suck up your time each episode. From researching to writing, recording, editing and promoting, the hours add up quickly. Pile a few more hours on if you're trying to create something really great or really firing up the promotions jets.

In this episode, I'll give you the time tally on creating a standard 30 minute podcast. Plus, I'll explain what could push this time up. Plus, I'll share how some smart podcasters are minimizing their efforts with a few production tricks - leaving more time for you to listen to my podcast, think about gifts you could buy me or work on that song about me you've been thinking about. Can you please stop putting those things off...FOCUS!

Okay, how much time do YOU think it takes to create a solid 30 minute podcast? Listen to my thoughts and then share yours with me on Facebook or drop me an email.

The more we talk opening about the time it takes, and the more we realistically we budget our time, the more joy we can have in the creative process.
