What happens when the honeymoon period has passed. Complacency creeps in with this couple who have been living together and dated for 3 years. What does a girl do when her boyfriend thinks that she “always” wants to be together when in reality, there’s not a whole lot going on between the two of them? This seems to happen to couples often. Janet and Brian talk through what this looks like to them and how they’d work through it.

Looking back, the gender roles of the past look very different than what they look like today. Even so, old school expectations have left their mark. Any person with an Asian heritage knows, being male in the social hierarchy is a big deal. In this episode, Janet reflects on favoritism towards boys when she was growing up in Korea. The remnants of the influence still remain although a lot of progress has been made. We going to be exploring some of the history behind where these ideas may come from to think about how we got here. Remember Confucius? He had some old-timey ideas.

Yes, there are not so nuanced differences in the way that Koreans form friendships and the way that Americans form friendships. Is there such a thing as doing “too much” for a friend? Well, yes, there need to be boundaries. Can you have “too many” friends? Well yeah, there needs to be a balance between quality and quantity. Janet going to girls only schools in South Korea for most of her life, while Brian went to public schools where the Asian population was lacking. You could say that if you were to act like a “normal” South Korean when it comes to engaging in friendships, it would look introverted by American standards. Janet and Brian get into talking about how the Korean culture and life experiences influence the way that they've developed friendships in their life.

Yes, there are racial tensions. Yes, media is a major driver of that. Yes, there are cultural differences and values. Yes, It's about time we talked about it a bit. Janet and Brian talk to what this looks like to them. Let's face it, not all of us speak up about injustice, so we're sticking our necks out on this one. If you see something wrong, you should make it known that it's wrong (kind of like Asian parents).

In light of much of "self-hating Asian" floating around on social media, Brian shares how it happened to him and how he was able to change that view as Janet helps him through the conversation.
