For a lot of us, personal development including the development of your self-awareness, social skills, empathy, etc. was not part of the Asian Tiger Mom/Dad training regimen. Funnily enough, the tiger path in a reduced view looks like "get good grades + get good degree + get good job = life success" not "know myself = life happiness". Our parents, now that we've come to where we are, only want us to be happy, but caused this shift in thought? It may not be true for everybody, but it's a trend that we're beginning to see emerge. Janet and Brian explore this idea in this week's episode. Tune in to hear more.

Microaggressions diminish the value of somebody's heritage, but what do you do when the person that is saying these things don't understand that they're being that way? It is important to understand the background and heritage of one's culture(s) to bridge those differences. It's also important to be respectful of somebody's background or differences if you don't understand or have any experience with them. Janet and Brian discuss microaggressions when it comes to "friends" when answering this week's question.

Racism was not gone, just hidden and COVID-19 has brought given an excuse for the ignorant to act out in violence towards people (aka Asian-Americans and Asian in America). It is disheartening to know that during a time when we need to be supporting each other, the truth is that there are destructive, cruel, and violent people out there. We and our individual selves did not bring this pandemic to the US, the virus travel here on its own using PEOPLE for a ride. Better recognize that rhetoric is history repeating itself. Janet and Brian weigh in on all the stories coming out about violence against Asians.

Janet and Brian get into it talking about different beauty standards from different countries and a little bit about where they come from to answer the question "Why Are Asian Girls Considered Attractive in Some Countries and Not Others?" Intuitively we may say culture, but there may be some other influences in there as well. Tune in to hear more!

Back in the day, our parents came to the US to pursue the American dream of working hard, earning your keep, and having a white picket fence. Janet and Brian talk more about what modern-day immigrants experience, namely through the lense of what Janet had experienced when she came to the US 5 years ago. Modern-day immigrants come to the US for different reasons than what immigrants came to the US in the past. From jokes lost in translation, expectations influenced by media, slang and other language barriers, etc. Tune in to hear more about what the modern-day Korean immigrant experiences in the US.

When you’re self-isolating, it’s important to keep tabs on your mental state. Does anybody else have cabin fever? Notice any unusual cravings lately? Reflecting on how much we may not have appreciated what we had before we all put ourselves into social isolation? Of course, it helps Janet and Brian to have each other, but doesn’t more exposure mean more opportunities for couple conflicts? One major thing that they have noticed is the fact that before the US started to shut down, they definitely didn’t take as much time to make their social health as much of a priority. Definitely feeling the effects of it now. Well, that’s now on the list of things to fix when it’s safe to do so. Tune in to find out as they share some of the things they have been doing to keep the self-isolation blues at bay!

Often in Asian upbringing, saying “I don’t know” is associated with getting ridiculed or punished by parents, teachers, and even peers (though none of these are unique to Asian culture). Janet and Brian talk share their experiences around how they’ve dealt with this in their life and what they’ve learned about being free of the shame of not knowing what society says you should. The environment and people that you’re around plays a huge part in your ability to learn and pick up new skills. Largely in part to the criticism with lack of direction that many of us faced when we were kids carry onto adulthood, my folks tend to shy away from having and sharing new ideas, learning new skills, etc. Unfortunately as adults if we’re not aware of this, we tend to perpetuate the cycle. Tune into this week’s episode “vs Saying I Don’t Know” to hear more.

Janet and Brian get into fitness talks. Fitness is a huge focal point in both American culture as well as Korean culture; however, the idea of what is “fit” is different. They tackle the myth about strength training making girls “bulky” as well as the differences in the way that being “fit” is perceived in both cultures. Spoiler alert: marketing makes fitness all about “looks”, but fitness is really about getting real good at doing day to day stuff like picking up boxes, dragging your carry-on onto a plane, moving things in general, etc. Tune into how our perception of “fitness” has been skewed by marketing, media, and social pressures.
