The Wolf and the Crane 狼与鹤

A hungry Wolf eats a big, fat Sheep.
    Wolf: Yummy! That was delicious.
    Now I’m full.

But a little while later, the Wolf feels something in his throat.
Wolf: Uh hum. (clears throat) What’s wrong?
There’s something stuck in my throat.
Oh no! It must be a bone.
    It hurts so much.
I must get it out. But I can’t.

The Wolf tries hard to take out the bone, but nothing works.
Wolf: It doesn’t go down. It doesn’t go up.
    I can’t do anything. I need help.

The Wolf looks around for help. He finds a Rabbit.
    Wolf: Hello there, little Rabbit.
    How have you been?
    Rabbit: It’s a Wolf! I better run!
    Wolf: Don’t run away!
Listen to me for a minute.
I have a small favor to ask.
Rabbit: What? A favor? What kind?
Wolf: Well, there is a bone stuck in my throat.
    It hurts so much.
If you take it out for me,
    I’ll do anything for you.
Rabbit: Take out a bone for you? How?
Wolf: By putting your paws in my mouth.
    Rabbit: That’s dangerous.
How do I know you are not tricking me?
You could bite off my paws.
Wolf: I am telling the truth.
Please trust me. I’ll do anything.
Rabbit: Let me see. It is very tempting.
But no, thanks. I would rather live.
    I don’t trust you. Bye.
Wolf: No, wait! Please, don’t go!

    The Rabbit just hops away.
The next day, the Wolf’s throat hurts more and more. This time he finds a Sheep.
    Wolf: Hello there, Miss Sheep.
Sheep: Oh please, Mr. Wolf! Don’t eat me!
    Wolf: Don’t worry. I won’t eat you.
    I just need your help.
Sheep: My help? What kind of help?
Wolf: Please take this bone out of my throat.
    It hurts so badly.
    I can’t eat. I can’t breathe well.
    Sheep: That’s too bad.
But why would I help you?
    You ate my friend yesterday.
And you might eat me today.
    Good-bye.
Wolf: Wait, Miss Sheep. I’ll do anything for you.
Plus, I’ll give you a reward.
Please! I won’t eat you! Come back!

The Wolf keeps calling the Sheep, but the Sheep just keeps walking. The Wolf’s throat gets worse and worse. He can hardly speak now. The Wolf is very sick and depressed. Later, a Crane comes by. The Crane is a very kind bird.
    Crane: What’s the matter, Wolf?
    You look very pale.
Wolf: (husky voice) it’s nothing. Just go away.
Crane; What’s wrong? Are you sick?
Wolf: (husky voice) I said, just go away.

The Crane feels sorry for the Wolf.
Crane: Tell me what’s wrong. I’ll help you.
Wolf: (husky voice) Really? You will help me?
Crane: Sure. How can I help you?
Wolf: (husky voice) Well, to tell the truth.
There is a bone stuck in my throat.
I can’t take it out by myself.
If you take it out for me,
    I’ll do anything for you.
Plus, I’ll even give you a big reward.
    Crane: Really? Great!
Just open wide and say, “Ah…”
    Wolf: Ahhhh…

The Crane puts his long neck and bill inside the Wolf’s mouth.
Crane: It’s very dark in here.
    I can’t see anything.
Wolf: It’s to your right. Look there.

The Crane finds the bone ant take it out easily.
Crane: Here it is. I got it.
Geez! Look at this! It is so big!
    It must have really hurt.
Wolf: Now I feel much better.
    Good-bye then.
    Crane: But wait a minute.
Aren’t you even going to say “thank you”?
    And where is my reward?
Wolf: Your reward? I gave it to you already.
    Crane: You did? When?
Wolf: When I didn’t bite off your head.
You are still alive, aren’t you?
    Crane: What? That’s my reward?
    I should have known.

The Crane can’t stop shaking his head in disbelief.

The Lion and the Deer 狮子和鹿

All day a Deer walks around in the green fields.
Deer: I walked all day. My legs hurt.
I am so tired. I am also thirsty.
    I must find some water.
    Is there a pond nearby?
Oh, there it is! See one.

The Deer goes to the pond for a drink.
Deer: The water looks cool and fresh.
    Hmm…I was right.
    It tastes very good.
I will drink a little more.

When the Deer leans down for a second drink, she sees another animal.
Deer: Oh, hi! Nice to meet you.
    When did you get here?
    What’s your name?

There is no answer from the pond. The Deer sees herself in the water for the first time. She is very surprised.
Deer: I said, “Nice to meet you.”
    Wait a minute!
    Hey, it moves like me.
    It even talks like me.
    Then perhaps?
    Yes! It’s me!
The Deer looks closely in the water.
Deer: I am beautiful! Look at my horns!
    They are so beautiful.
They are the most beautiful horns
    in the world.
I am blessed. Thank you, God.

A few minutes latter, the Deer sees her legs.
Deer: What are those? Are those my legs?
They can’t be. They are so skinny.
They are so ugly. I hate my legs.
    Boo-hoo-hoo.
    Turtle: Hello, Deer.
    What’s the matter?
Why are you crying? Can I help you?
Deer: Well, Turtle, just look at my legs.
    Turtle: What’s wrong with them?
    Deer: They are too skinny.
    My horns are so beautiful.
But my legs are so ugly.
    I hate my legs.
    I want to hide them.
    What can I do?
    Turtle: Is that all?
    Your legs aren’t ugly.
They are just a little thin.
But at least they are long.
    Turtle: Look at my legs.
    They are so short.
    I can’t run.
    I can’t even walk fast.
    You should be grateful.
Deer: But I don’t like my legs.
How can I get some new ones?
    God is so unfair.
    Turtle: Don’t be foolish.
    There is no way.
    Be happy with your legs.
    Someday they will help you.
    Deer: What do you mean?
Turtle: You’ll find out one day.
    Beauty is not everything.
    So cheer up.
    Deer: I don’t understand.
But thanks anyway. See you again, Turtle.
The Deer comes out of the pond and rests for a few minutes.
    Lion: Look!
    A Deer!
    It looks tired.
    I can catch it easily.
    Today is my lucky day.
    Deer: I better go now.
    A Lion might pass by.
    Lion: Grrr…
    Come here, Deer.
    I want to eat you.
    Deer: Oh no!
    A Lion!
    I better run away.
The Deer quickly runs away. She is very fast.
    Deer: Come on legs!
    RUN FASTER!!!
Lion: Stop there! Oh, it’s no use!
That Deer is too fast for me.
    Where did she go?

The Deer runs away ahead and hides behind a tree.
    Deer: Geez!
    My legs are skinny.
    But they are really fast.
    Where’s the Lion?
    I can’t see him.
    Lion: Where are you?
You can’t run away from me.
Come out, come out, wherever you are.

The Deer decides to hide in the forest. There are many, many big trees.
Deer: I’ll go in the forest and hide from the Lion.
    Hey, what’s wrong?
    I can’t move.
My horns are caught in a branch.
    I can’t get loose.
    The Lion is coming closer.
    What shall I do?
    Lion: There you are, Deer.
    Too bad.
    You are trapped!
    I will eat you now.
    Bye, bye.
    Deer: Oh, no!
    This can’t be!
My skinny legs helped me get away.
