第74课 自己活也让别人活

What do you plan to do in the summer, Wendy?

To be frank, I haven't made any plans. What about you?

To tell the truth, I want to see how the Amish people live.

What for? From what I hear, they're boring people.

To be honest, I think they're kind of weird.

Nonsense! In fact, their simple way of life is quite appealing to me.

Well, to each their own, I guess.

128. The Acne Problem

While most teenagers had acne（青春痘）, a condition（状况） where one gets a lot of pimples（粉刺）, Melinda had great skin. Her skin was perfectly smooth（光滑） with no flaws（瑕疵） whatsoever. She thinks she got her smooth skin from her parents. She also might have smooth skin because she drinks a lot of water.
Having acne is tough because teenagers care a lot about their appearance（外表） and what other people think of them. Having acne can cause people to feel bad about themselves, shy away（回避） from others, and not go out. Melinda doesn't have this problem, but her sister, Ivana, does. Ivana didn't understand why she had acne, because no one in her family had it. Ivana ate fairly healthy, too. She felt like she was just unlucky. Because of her acne, Ivana felt insecure（缺乏自信的） about herself. It was hard for her to be confident. She always tried to avoid（避开） attention. She barely talked to anyone.
Ivana decided to try ProActiv because she kept seeing it on TV. It ended up improving（改善） her skin. It was less red and bumpy（不平的）. Meanwhile, Melinda got her very first pimple, and it was on the day of her big speech in class! It was horrible timing（时机）. That's the thing about pimples though, they just appear out of nowhere!

73. The Amish

第73课 亚米希人

In the heart of America, in the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana, live (vi.) some people who are not your typical Americans.
在美国的心脏地带，也就是在宾夕法尼亚州、俄亥俄州和印第安纳州，住着一些并非典型的美国人。
In order to lead simple lives, they don't use cars.
为了过简朴的生活，他们不用汽车；
Instead, they drive horse-drawn buggies.
他们反而驾驶马车。
They don't use electric lights, either, not to mention telephones.
他们也不使用电灯，更别说是电话了。
They make their own clothing, which looks ancient.
他们自己做样式古老的衣服。
And, to make matters worse, they don't speak English but German among themselves.
更糟的是，他们彼此之间不用英语交谈，而是用德语。
These people are the Amish.
这些人是亚米希人。
They settled in America almost 300 years ago.
他们在近三百年前来到美国定居。
Most of them are farmers who stay away from the temptations of the city.
他们大部分都是远离城市诱惑的农民。
As modern life becomes more and more complicated, the Amish way of life seems to make more and more sense.
在现代生活变得愈来愈复杂的同时，亚米希人的生活方式似乎越来越有道理了。
