Results from the Jerusalem municipal elections produced an unprecedented ultra-Orthodox takeover of the city council, with Haredi parties winning just over half the seats in the 31-seat legislative body.

KAN's Mark Weiss spoke with Laura Wharton from Meretz , elected to the council as one of the four members of the Jerusalem Union list headed by Yossi Havilio.

As the Likud-led government coalition scrambles to prepare a new conscription bill further exempting ultra-orthodox men from being drafted into the military, a new poll has found that a growing and overwhelming majority of Israelis favor canceling the exemptions and drafting yeshiva students just like the rest of the Jewish citizens. The poll was conducted by Hiddush for Religious Freedom and Equality and its head Rabbi Uri Regev told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan that the big change was in the number of people who didn’t want any compromise deal with the ultra orthodox and against any exemptions. A new document has been discovered that could have a significant bearing on the controversial sale of the large parking  lot in Jerusalem’s Old City Armenian quarter to developers who plan to build a hotel on the site.

The document from 1574 purports to show that the land in question is supposed to benefit the Armenian community and therefore the Armenian patriarch of Jerusalem who sold the land 3 years ago had no right to do so.

Jerusalem attorney Danny Seidemann, who is helping the Armenian community,  spoke with KAN's Mark Weiss about the dispute and the latest twist.

Municipal elections are taking place across the country this Tuesday. It’s a national holiday and a great excuse to get out into nature and enjoy some of Israel’s natural beauty, particularly now as flowers begin to bloom. Keren Kayemet Le’Israel, the Jewish National Fund, has readied its forests for visitors. The exhibition "With New Eyes: Landscape Architects Paint and Photograph an Israeli Landscape" opens at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque on March 4th. As its title suggests, the works in the exhibition give artistic expression to the contributors' personal connection to the local landscape and its spaces. The impact of the October 7th war on the Israeli landscape is also reflected in some of the works in the exhibition,  which is curated by  Ayelet Amorai-Biran. KAN reporter Naomi Segal heard more about the exhibition and what is landscape architecture, from one of the participating landscape architects, Revital Shoshany.
