3 Likud MKs have sent a strongly-worded letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu attacking the military draft bill, which provides for widespread exemptions for the Ultra-Orthodox from military service.    Their intention was not only to say no, but to also propose a solution, based on the understanding that in the long-term, the logic of placing the burden of military service on the same segment of the population is wrong. 

KAN's Mark Weiss asked Yehoshua Pfeffer, a Jerusalem community rabbi and founder of the IYUN Institute, how the ultra-Orthodox community has responded to the growing calls for a more equitable sharing of the burden of military service.

 Israel's Reform movement has petitioned the High Court of Justice to challenge the Defense Ministry's decision to move up the draft dates of participants in pre-army programs, but not to cancel draft deferments of first-year Orthodox yeshiva students.

The battles with Hamas and Hizbullah have left scorched earth behind them and caused fires in several nature reserves in the south, and on the border with Lebanon. The movement of heavy military vehicles, plowing new roads and staging areas, has destroyed some of the landscape. Waste left behind by soldiers has created pollution and stray dogs slipping in from the Gaza Strip have created a dangerous health hazard. The environmental damage, while not disastrous, is in some cases irreparable. Some 40 protesters were removed from the Kerem Shalom Crossing on Sunday after setting up tents to block the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

IDF troops remain stationed at the crossing to prevent the return of protestors  to the closed military area.

In recent weeks, groups of protesters  led by the Tsav 9 group, have blocked the crossing in an attempt to prevent humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza’s civilian population while the hostages remain in Hamas captivity.

The Egyptian regime would hardly shed any tears if Hamas – which they view like the outlawed Muslim brotherhood – was destroyed. Yet Cairo is threatening to abrogate the historic peace treaty with Israel if the IDF goes through with its planned invasion of Rafah and takeover of the Philadelphia corridor along the frontier. Ruth Wasserman Lande, a former member of Knesset and deputy ambassador to Egypt and today a research fellow at the Misgav Institute for National Security, said that Israel needs to beef up its strategic dialogue with Egypt. The ratings agency Moody’s has downgraded Israel’s credit rating due to the impact of the ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza. The ratings agency also lowered its outlook for Israel’s debt to “negative” due to what is said was "the risk of an escalation” with Hezbollah along Israel's northern border.

Prof. Avi Weiss, President of the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Israel and professor of economics at Bar-Ilan University, spoke to KAN's Naomi Segal about what the Moody's downgrade means.
