The Blavatnik Family Foundation, the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the New York Academy of Sciences have announced the laureates of the 2026 Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists in Israel, which recognizes their groundbreaking research taking place in Israel. Each  recipient receives $100,000 in prize money, with the awards ceremony to be held in June at the Peres Center Peace & Innovation in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. This year's recipients are Sergey N. Semenov, a chemist at the Weizmann Institute of Science; Paz Beniamini, an astrophysicist at the Open University of Israel; and Uri Ben-David a cancer biologist at Tel Aviv University. Two people in a serious condition who were evacuated from a cruise ship with a confirmed outbreak of deadly hantavirus have arrived in the Netherlands for treatment.

A third passenger in a stable condition was on board an evacuation flight that has been delayed, but the flight was delayed.

The MV Hondius is now sailing towards Spain's Canary Islands after being anchored for three days near Cape Verde, an archipelago nation off the West African coast.

Separately, Dutch media reported on Thursday that a KLM flight attendant had been admitted to hospital in Amsterdam with hantavirus symptoms.

Three people who were aboard the ship have died since it set sail from Argentina a month ago.

 In its latest update, the World Health Organization (WHO) said eight cases of hantavirus - three confirmed and five suspected - have so far been identified in people who were on the ship.

Richard Strauss's opera Salome returns to the Israeli Opera stage this month, with performances May 8-18th, featuring two casts of Israeli and international artists. Conductor Dan Ettinger, Music Director of the Israeli Opera and Israel Symphony Orchestra spoke to KAN's Naomi Segal about the powerful production, which is part of the opera's 40th season celebrations.

British police are setting ⁠up a new team ‌of 100 officers, including counter terrorism specialists, to help ‌protect Jewish communities across London after a series of antisemitic attacks ⁠including the stabbing of two men.

The plan announced on Wednesday for ⁠a dedicated protection team comes as officers announced more arrests for antisemitism.

London's ‌top police boss Mark Rowley said Jewish communities were facing "sustained threats" ‌from hostile state actors as well as extreme right-wing groups, elements of the extreme left and Islamist terrorists.

Detectives are examining whether the arson incidents have possible Iranian links, after British security officials warned that Iran was using criminal proxies to carry out hostile activity.
