The Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee has approved a bill that is designed to change the composition of the Judges Selection Committee and to deny the High Court of Justice any option of either intervening or striking down basic laws.
The bill now moves to its first reading in the Knesset plenum next week.
President Yitzhak Herzog on Sunday said that he is deeply concerned that the judicial reform in its current format might adversely affect Israel’s democratic foundations. “We are on the verge of legal and social collapse, and I refuse to stand by,” he said.
Yossi Beilin served as Justice minister 1999-2001.
