Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador, has announced her candidacy for president, becoming the first major challenger to former President Donald Trump for the 2024 Republican nomination. The 51-year-old ex-Trump cabinet official is the first in a long line of Republicans who are expected to launch 2024 campaigns in the coming months. Among them are Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, and Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina. Prof. Eytan Gilboa, an expert on the United States at Bar-Ilan University and a senior fellow at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, spoke to KAN reporter Naomi Segal about Haley and her bid.

The earthquakes in Turkey, which were felt by many in Israel, along with several milder tremors that occurred in Israel in the days following, were a stark reminder of the critical need for earthquake preparedness. Prof. Shmulik Marco, a professor in the geophysics department at Tel Aviv University, spoke to KAN reporter Naomi Segal about the complex fault system in this region, and the need for Israel to be ready.

Knesset committee passes first  sections of judicial overhaul. Tens of thousands protest outside the Knesset.4 rockets fired from Gaza intercepted.

The Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee has approved a bill that is designed to change the composition of the Judges Selection Committee and to deny the High Court of Justice any option of either intervening or striking down basic laws.

The bill now moves to its first reading in the Knesset plenum  next week.

President Yitzhak Herzog on Sunday  said that he is deeply concerned that the judicial reform in its current format might adversely affect Israel’s democratic foundations. “We are on the verge of legal and social collapse, and I refuse to stand by,” he said.

Yossi Beilin served as Justice minister 1999-2001.

Reporter Mark Weiss asked him what worries him the most about the government’s judicial overhaul plan.

The High Court of Justice has set a March 12 deadline for the prime minister and attorney general to respond to a petition filed by the Movement for Quality Government demanding that Benjamin Netanyahu be declared unfit to serve as prime minister and required to take a leave of absence, citing conflict of interest surrounding the government's proposed judicial reforms and Netanyahu's own corruption trial. Coalition leaders assailed the petition and scheduled hearing as akin to coup attempt.
