The 2022 Jewish People Policy Institute’s Annual Assessment of the Situation and Dynamics of the Jewish People is published during turbulent times for world Jewry. The in-depth 124-page report undertakes to determine whether the past year's developments have affected Israel and the Jewish world positively or negatively. The assessment, which includes policy recommendations, has been presented to the Government of Israel and shared with Jewish communal leaders worldwide

So how did external dynamics – such as Russia's war on Ukraine, and internal dynamics – such as demographic trends in the Jewish population, impact the wellbeing of the Jewish people? KAN reporter Naomi Segal put the question to Shmuel Rosner,  senior fellow at Jewish People Policy Institute.

The Jerusalem court for administrative affairs has ruled that the population authority and interior ministry must recognize as married couples who  wed online in the framework of the so-called Utah Marriages. The court accepted a petition lodged by the non-profit organization Hiddush – for Religious Freedom and Equality, on behalf of eight couples whom the population authority did not register as married at the directive of then-Interior Minister Aryeh Deri of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party.

A Utah marriage is a wedding ceremony with a  marriage officiant in Utah County and remote, live appearance by the couple. Rabbi Uri Regev, director of Hiddush- for Freedom of Religion and Equality spoke to KAN reporter Naomi Segal about the ruling and its significance.

Iran's president has warned that he will not accept "chaos", as authorities continue to crack down on protests that have swept across the country since the death in custody of a young woman.

Fresh unrest was reported on Wednesday night amid a mounting death toll.

State media have said that 41 people, including security personnel, have been killed and that more than 1,200 have been arrested.

Meanwhile, 13 people have been killed in Iraq's Kurdistan region as Iran launched missiles and armed drones at what it said were bases of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.

KAN's Mark Weiss spoke with Ahmad Rafat , an expert on Iranian affairs based in London, and asked him if the protests are continuing.

World chess champion Magnus Carlsen has for the first time openly accused fellow player Hans Niemann of cheating.

In a statement, he said he believed  Niemann had "cheated more — and more recently — than he has publicly admitted", though offered no evidence.

Carlsen had previously made veiled accusations against Niemann, who beat him this month in a major upset.

Niemann, 19, has denied cheating in competitive chess and has accused Carlsen of trying to ruin his career.

The West are calling the referendums in eastern Ukraine a sham. Russia says they were legitimate. But either way, even if the referendum massively shows the people of the eastern provinces in Ukraine overwhelmingly chose to join Russia, international law does not allow Russia to unilaterally annex any part of Ukraine. Robbie Sabel a professor of international law at Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a former chief legal adviser to the Foreign Ministry, said that Russia’s claims that it was defending its own territory was therefore illegitimate. He told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan that Moscow was likely motivated to hold a referendum for internal needs for legitimacy at home.
