Kateri finds herself in a difficult physical and moral situation but demonstrates courage,  patience, and good humor. She does her best to obedience towards her dysfunctional adoptive parents. 

There are some clear references to violence and war. References to pagan mythology and to Kateri’s being orphaned by disease. Some moments of intensity and arguments between families. Negative gossip and anti-Christian language on the part of some of the Mohawk characters.
