The New England Patriots could be in crisis mode at wideout for the next few weeks. After a summer where the room was touted as complete, a Kayshon Boutte trade, an A.J. Brown injury and a poor Romeo Doubs debut has left question marks at the position.

But have no fear, a pair of young wideouts are here to help pick up the slack.

Both DeMario Douglas and Kyle Williams — who have each shined during parts of their Patriots tenures — have big opportunities now in the wake of Brown's high-ankle sprain. Last week against the Seahawks, Douglas caught five passes while Williams was held catchless.

The receiver room right now is Doubs, Douglas, Williams, Mack Hollins and Efton Chism III. Kyle Dixon, Cameron Dorner and Chandler Brayboy are on the practice squad.

3 Things Patriots Must Fix if They Want to Beat Steelers

Regain Drake Maye's Confidence

If Maye can return to form, where he's able to hit his receivers down the field and make smart decisions with the football, the Patriots should end up winning this game. Josh McDaniels should call some quick hitters early into the game to try and have his young quarterback settle in.

Open Up More Running Lanes

It didn't help the Patriots that their running game was nearly non-existent against Seattle's defense. They totaled just 58 rushing yards from running backs, and for most of the night, nothing was cooking from the inside.

The Patriots will likely get TreVeyon Henderson back after he missed the opener with an ankle injury. If Henderson is a full go, and the offensive line can clear lanes against a stout Steelers' front seven, that opens up the entire playbook.

Don't Leave Top WRs Wide Open

Last week, the Steelers got solid outings from their top two receivers to beat the Atlanta Falcons. D.K. Metcalf (four receptions for 40 yards) and Michael Pittman Jr. (three receptions for 58 yards) didn't light the world on fire, but helped the Steelers open the year with a win. If the Patriots want to shut them down, they'll need some good showings from their secondary.

On a fourth down, the Seahawks found a wide-open Smith-Njigba — who had been left alone in zone coverage. He took it 45 yards for a game-changing touchdown. The Patriots can't afford to let those two big-bodied pass catchers alone in space.

Patriots sign DaQuan Jones

Jones has a lot of positive attributes. He is a veteran of 12 NFL seasons and a combined 179 games, and at 6-foot-4, 320 pounds should help the Patriots shore up their interior defensive line.

He also has worked with Mike Vrabel before, and the Patriots head coach seems to have high hopes for the 34-year-old.

Jones started his career as a fourth-round draft pick with the Titans in 2014. He spent seven seasons with the organization, including the final three under Vrabel. Later, he also played for the Panthers and the Bills, accumulating a combined 394 tackles and 21.5 sacks since entering the league.

Despite his experience and proven qualities as a big-bodied disruptor in the middle, Jones remained unsigned since entering free agency in March. He did visit with the Patriots in mid-August but was not signed at the time — a possibly deliberate decision: a vested veterans such as Jones being on the Week 1 roster would guarantee his salary for the remainder of the season.

Drake Maye loses week 1

Patriots controlled that game until Maye turned it over, then Seattle coaching got the upper hand in the second half turning it into the Super Bowl again.

Looked to have a good connection with AJ Brown going.  That’s it.

Can not operate throw the ball from line of scrimmage through 7 yards. Everything is down field

INT #3 – As bad as a decision you can make as a QB. The Throw may have been worse. He might have had Hollins at the back Pilon.

He doesn’t throw to areas. He throws to receivers.

Track record show Drake Maye is not a good quarterback against good competition.

Do the Pats know that? Was he muzzled to start the game or were they trying to establish themselves as a running team? Stagnant, stuck in the mud, un inspired offensive play calling and execution.  One drive of creativity resulting in the TD after under throw from Maye.

I want to place blame on the coaching staff for not giving any starters playing time in the preseason. I will also blame the NFL for all the rules and changes made that cause the first 3-4 weeks of the season to look like trash.

Offensive line – Looked better. Not great

Stevenson – Bell cow. Best offensive player on the field

Defense – Run defense sucks

-          Drew Lock and the play calling caught them a handful of times.

-          34 million man Christian Gonzalez dropped an INT made one significant pass break up on JSN. Why was he not shadowing him all night? JSN burnt them every time they needed a play.  

Looking ahead. 10 days until Pittsburgh. Expecting a good bounce back. The team should take care of shitty and middling competition. Maye will probably look fine.  It is mostly insignificant until the QB proves he can at least no LOSE you games against elite competition.

The running game was a huge problem for the Patriots defense against the Seahawks in rhe Super Bowl with Kenneth walker winning mvp, did the Patriots do enough this offseason to address that problem?

Christian Gonzalez just got paid 4 years 135 million with 102 million guaranteed, one of the biggest offseason news was Gonzalez now that’s he paid can he lock down JSN and the rest of the best receivers in the league? 

It seems as though the defense has the most question marks going in to this game, last year the Patriots couldn’t get to Sam Darnold giving him time to make decisions. Can they do it this time around?

AJ Brown is the best receiver the Patriots have had in a long time, then adding Romeo Doubs will they be a problem for the Seahawks secondary? 

Rhamondre Stevenson had a great camp and is now catching balls out of the backfield. Could he see the bulk of the load on Wednesday and if so where does that leave Henderson?

If the Patriots lose this game, what does that mean going forward?

If the Patriots win this game, should the nfl be put on notice?

Red Sox — Roman Anthony & Trevor Story Back

·           Chad Tracy's approach: Before the series-defining finale (with home-field playoff tiebreaker on the line), Tracy told his clubhouse to treat it like any other game and tried to strip away the stakes. Didn't fully work — Yankees rolled 16-1.

·           After the tough loss, Tracy stayed even-keeled and pointed to a bigger picture, on a controversial no-catch call that swung the game: "It's frustrating; we had a really good baseball game right there, a zero-zero game... it's another one of those plays where you're kind of at the mercy of what they call on the field, which stinks."

·           The bounce-back is the story: One day after the 16-1 blowout, Boston beat Seattle 10-9 in extra innings on a Trevor Story walk-off. That's the clearest evidence of a team not caving to pressure — quick turnaround from a demoralizing loss to a statement win.

·           Roman Anthony handled a different kind of pressure — public criticism, not competitive pressure. He pushed back directly on Boston radio chatter suggesting he prioritized nightlife over rehab: "It's never been a problem and it's never really even been a thing. I prioritize getting to bed and doing everything I can to show up and give it all to my teammates and to the fans... when things aren't going your way and you're a 22-year-old kid that does anything other than just go home and go straight to bed, people have something to say." Good "pressure of playing in Boston" talking point.

·           Trevor Story downplayed the "hero" narrative around his own return rather than embracing the spotlight — consistent with a team trying to lower the temperature amid a playoff push.

·           Context stat for the show: Red Sox are 75-64, 4 games back of the Yankees, sitting on the No. 2 AL Wild Card — so the pressure is real, but not a must-win-every-day situation yet.
