Graterford Prison, officially known as the State Correctional Institution – Graterford (SCI Graterford), was a maximum-security prison located in Skippack Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It opened in 1929 and was Pennsylvania’s largest maximum-security prison, housing around 3,500 inmates at its peak.

Firefighters were called to a house fire in Jefferson County on July 12th, 2007. Walking into a fire, one of the top responsibilities of a firefighter is life safety. Unfortunately for these particular firefighters, they had just walked into a nightmare. During their search they found an infant deceased in the house. If that wasn’t bad enough, they couldn’t find the mother Joey Lynn Offutt. She wasn’t in the house, so where could she have been? The week leading up to this fire there were red flags left and right. Why did Joey’s family and community not push for answers that week? Could there have been a different outcome? It has been almost 17 years and authorities are no closer in finding out what happened the awful morning of July 12th, 2007, or where Joey is.

Alicia Bernice Markovich was a 15-year-old freshman at Windber High School. She was a good student and a member of the school track team. Alicia was visiting her father on April 26th, when they began arguing about her grades and what her father thought was a poor choice in friends. She stormed out of the house carrying only her purple sunglasses and was never seen again. 

When does being a kid stop? Is it at 18, when teens gain legal rights like voting and privacy? Or at 21, when they can buy alcohol? Maybe at 25, when they can rent a car, or 26, when they lose their parents’ insurance. The brain isn’t fully developed until 25, affecting judgment. Teens process information with the amygdala (emotions), while adults use the prefrontal cortex (rational thinking). This context helps us understand the unsolved case of Codi “Geno” Joyce, who died at a party on 9/27/2015. Despite known suspects, no arrests have been made due to lack of police involvement and silence among friends.
