Andrei Chikatilo, also known as the Butcher of Rostov or the Red Ripper, was a Soviet serial killer who sexually assaulted, murdered, and mutilated at least 52 women and children. He was born in Ukrainian USSR in 1936 and faced poverty, ridicule, hunger, and war during his childhood. Chikatilo's crimes escalated over time, and he targeted both male and female victims. He was eventually arrested in 1984 and found guilty of multiple murders. However, his first arrest led to the wrongful execution of another man.
