Steve Nelson is a former fly fishing guide (Alaska and Wisconsin) and is my cousin. He is a thoughtful man, and I have had the pleasure of seeing him go through his wild twenties into a more domesticated father breaching forty years of age. Steve has been a huge part of my own coming into manhood.

We discuss the many aspects of fishing, and the philosophy behind both fly and spey fishing. We talk about the lessons learned on the river and how they apply to all aspects of life, the psychedelic aspect of merging with nature while fishing, our own relationship, and much more. It was a lot of fun and it is always a pleasure to pick Steve's brain about fishing and more.

Andre and I had a little smoke over the weekend and talked a lot of jiu-jitsu. BJJ is more than a hobby or sport to many who practice it, and will often transforms lives and lifestyles.

Black belt Andre Devillier certainly lives it, and believes everyone should do bjj for self improvement.

We talk all about his beginnings in training, some of his experiences fighting both sanctioned and non, and even talk about a gunfight he got into in his twenties. He's such a nice guy now that it is almost unbelievable to hear the story. We also discuss a lot of death, Andre's experiences in a children's hospital, psychedelics, and much more.

Andre is a calm, kind, and down-to-earth individual with myriad experiences, and I'm grateful he was willing to share them on the podcast.

Scott joins me for a second time on the podcast (previously appearing in #8) with his wife and business partner Sara. They are owners of Crescive Soil (crescivesoil.com), and largely do consulting on the soil food web and interactions of microbes in the soil, in regards to cannabis horticulture.

Scott personally inspired me to take Elaine Ingham's online courses about the soil food web, and both he and Sara are incredibly well-versed on the subject.

We discuss Scott's upcoming talks at Soil to Sold June 22nd (tickets available on eventbrite) with members from Forever Flowering as well as Phylos Genetics. It should be informative to say the least!

The conversation spans from the fundamentals of the soil food web to some of the mistakes growers are making and some of the things they could do better to push their soil food web in a healthier direction.

We also discuss how grow lights can affect human biology, and how late-night shifts in the grow room can profoundly impact human health for the worse. We tie these hormonal effects of light in with circadian and metabolic rhythms of the human body, and even discuss time restricted eating and intermittent fasting. We go on to talk about glyphosate and its effects on both the soil biome as well as the human microbiome.

Scott and Sara are a pleasure to talk to, and their passion for microbial health (in relation both to plant and human health) is very apparent. Soil to Sold will undoubtedly be an informative event and I am sure will be well worth attending for anyone interested in cannabis horticulture, plant health, soil health, or the changing landscape of cannabis industry in the United States.

In 2002, Patrick left to the Pakistan/Afghanistan border to report on the events in the region, and later followed the US Army through Iraq as well.

Patrick has plenty of near-otherworldly experiences from his travels, which inform his unique worldview and perspective--not only on US involvement in the region, but on life in general.

We have a couple beverages and talk about his endeavors in conflict journalism, the experience of traveling, growing up on the front range of Colorado, cannabis genetics in relation to Afghanistan, hash producing, and landraces, and much more.

The discussion continued onto microbiology, psychology, and many of my own interests, but was unfortunately not recorded--hopefully we will have another conversation and can pick up where we left off here.
